Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - figured I'd share

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There's a dude who comes into the shop every so often who is always making snide remarks about the fact that I ride a "budget Schwinn" and talking about his "fully custom track bike" and bla bla bla bla. When I try to ask him about what kind of frame, parts, etc. he's got, he always responds by saying "it's fully custom, like everything" and never has any sort of straight answer. I was beginning to have my doubts on whether or not this dink really even had a bike - until today when he brought it in because his left crank arm fell off.

Or did he pick "popular."

you know, leader does that too. they make an alumnium frame with the cutout, and it seems to be doing quite well in the market. so republic isnt the only company on the fixie 'bandwagon'. both companies were just smart enough to find out what people wanted, and sometimes its not always the best end result. however, leader does make the frames that people want, and republic makes a affordable 'custom' bike without having to build a bike part by part, and for the people that are more form than function, it serves the purpose well enough and people ride them.
the people who ride republics probably like the bike for what they have, and don't care whether their bike is crmo or hiten for biking to school - as long as people are on their bike, right? thats what matters. however, i understand that you would be a bit mad that someone would call your bike a 'budget schwinn' when it really is a good bike - people have asked me if my concept is a visp, and to be honest that does bug me in a way. however, you still cannot deny that republic is not a bad company in any way, and is just doing what every other business is doing. the only bad bike there is is the one that is not ridden.

If by "custom" you mean they will paint it a colour you can choose from and partially assemble it.

i didnt mean leader being on the same level of frame, i meant jumping on the aero fixed gear bandwagon. however, i will not argue that the chrome lugged frame is something ive never seen before for under 500.

that's hilarious. I worked with a guy who claimed to ride a custom track and made fun of my stock lager. Dude rode a republic he bought off the floor at an urban outfitters. Compared to that I'll take my lager.

Sorry man. It'll be done today.
maybe u can do a detailed review now u've gone up close and personal with a republic bike :D
snap some photos, put the whole thing on a fish scale, then report back.
A few weeks back, a cyclist was admiring my Vilano. He perceived it to be a more expensive bike. During the conversation, he was particularly envious of the saddle, comparing it to his, which he felt was cheaper and expressed a desire to upgrade it to a $ 60-100 saddle, like mine probably cost ? He also threw out a figure he thought I paid for my bike at being in the $ 500-650 range. I inquired about his and he had bought his from a friend who had originally bought it brand new for $ 400, coincidentally about what a Republic sells for. He bought his for about $ 200 with low usage. It pays to wipe down and clean any bike, you never know what someone else perceives it's worth to be ? Neither of us could discern a brand or model of his bike, so I honestly couldn't tell anyone whether it was a fantastic deal or not, but his was a decent clean used bike from what I could tell and $ 200 seems like a good deal these days ?

I hear you have to hand tool a new bolt everytime you reattach the crank arm, that s h ! t gets expensive. That's what you get for riding fully custom bikes.
