Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a 1980 Univega road bike which I bought new for $200 25 years ago, which has been unused in the garage for the last 10 years. At the time, I thought $200 for a bike was a big expense! I recently took it to my local bike shop, and they did a thorough overhaul for $260. This involved cleaning and lubricating all bearings (bottom bracket, wheels, head set), installing new stainless steel cables and guides, cleaning all running gear components, new tires, adding a new Cateye light (this is the new $50 model which is fabulous), new pedals, new kick stand, wrapping the bars, and a few other things. I was amazed how good this bike still is! I have really enjoyed riding it again. So what if it has downtube shifters! I think this was well worth the investment, since I can't afford to lay out $1,000-$1500 for a new bike. I have a daughter in college, which is costing me around $1,500 a month -- the cost of a new first-rate bike). Some day, when she is successfully employed, she will buy me a brand new Eddie Merxx (sp?) road bike for $7,600! Am I dreaming, or what?

My kids all are long out of college & unfortunately, you are dreaming. Just getting them through school & out on their own is achievable but forget about a new bike.
By the way, $200.00 was a big expense for most of us back in 1979.

Damm, beer must be ALOT more expensive than I remember.
I have a 1500 buck bike in the garage. My daily ride is a new to me 1980s Univega Super Nouva. Don't get me wrong, I love my Klein, but the Uni is a blast. Stripped of it's gears, shifter and rear brake it's not much heavier than the Klein. Great every day commuter. Very comfy.
