Bicycle Mechanics - SS Chain Length?

Yes, it's me again...still trying to finish up the SS. I received the Surley Chain Tensioner and my new chain ring, now it is time to install the chain. Any idea what the perfect length is for a SS chain. I bought a SS chain and the guy at the shop said to measure carefully. That is always a statement that causes some nervousness. I figured you would do the same thing you do on a geared bike right? Any suggestions would help calm the nerves.

Am I missing something about your situation? I think this should be simple: Just take the chain in its store-bought, full length condition, loop it into the drivetrain, and see how long it needs to be - if you have a chain tensioner, you don't even need to be that terribly precise. Then remove the unnecessary links, put that baby back together, and go ride already!

Put the rear wheel as far foward in the dropouts as possible. Wrap the chain around the cog and chainring. Then put the two ends together with your hands to see where you need to "cut" the chain. Remove the excess links with your chain tool and put the ends togethen. Now tighten the rear wheel in the dropouts.

Since he is using a Singulator its going to be more like a geared bike actually... since he apparently has vertical dropouts. No sliding the wheel around there or anything.
