Would it be possible or economical to transform my hybrid into a roadie? I am probably going to use this bike for training, possibly a triathalon. I would like to get a little more speed, and wonder if I could just change out the wheels and the handlebars. Let me know what everyone thinks

I went down this path about 5 years ago. I had a Trek UAV-II, which was a great hybrid. I got the bug to have a road bike, though, and I spent a bit of money and effort changing things out. Wheels, fork, components, just about everything. It never did really ride that well after that, and I ended up getting a new road bike.

You might be better off selling it as it is and appying the money toward a bike truly built for what you want.

One issue is that your rear dropout spacing may be 135 and current road wheels are 130 OLN. What's your plan for shifters? Flat bar shifters wont go on road bars.If you have V brakes, road integrated shifters aren't compatible. You going to have high enough gearing without also changing out cranks? That could cause FD compatibility issues,if you didn't already have some with road shifters. You'll probably need a different stem. Possible, yes.Economical no. And, since you are asking,do you even have the knowhow to to pull it off?

the know how...I figure I am an intelligent guy and could figure it out. I was just trying to see if this would even be worth the effort, and it sounds like it isn't. Thanks for the input.

Ride it. I did my first duathlon on a MTB bike.

Give it to a family member who is close to your size...

Why don't you just ride it? You won't recoup enough money to be worth it and a road bike will cost a lot more. It should only be a little slower most of the time and if you don't have the hightest gears you get to take a coast down the steapest hills.

Id tried it with a Trek 7300 last year, drop bars the 'whole 9 yards'. It was an ok ride, but eventually I droped it for a cross bike.

Well, I just got off the phone with the guy at the bike shop, and he will give me $290 for it, and I paid $340. Not too bad so I am looking at a Trek 1000 and a Lemond now.

I used to work in a bike shop and I see a lot of your kind. People who got the performance bug and want to change their hybrid to a road bike. Same thing I tell them, don't do it.

You see the kids driving around in Hondas with huge rear wing and lowered suspension? Yeah...

I'd say that $50 for "renting" it for 6 weeks is probably the best deal you're going to get if you really want to get rid of it.
