hey guys new to the site. just wanna share my progress on my SS conversion build. got the bike for free from my friend. its a bianchi timberwolf and i could only take pics just for today. but everything is going to be self done.

IT looks you'll need a single speed conversion kit for your freehub, as well as a freehub tool and chainwhip. You might also need a new crankset. That one looks like it might have the chainrings built into the crank. Check to see if you have any bicycle co-ops in your city. They usually got all kinds of cheap used parts and tools for you to use.

yeah everything is going to be new or used. and as for the chain rings, i didnt check if they were or not. but i will get on that. thanks danz.

Nope. That is a freewheel hub, not cassette.

OP, I'd suggest visiting the sheldonbrown.com site. There is an entire section on converting an old bike to singlespeed or fixed gear on the cheap. Sheldon also deals with pretty well any question you might have and does so in an easy to understand, definitive manner.

Are you sure? Not saying you're wrong, but I see what looks like a lockring of some sort on the outside of the cog cluster, which suggests a cassette on a freehub. The cogs look like Shimano hyperglide or superglide, which are normally cassettes.

There is a lockring but I betcha it holds the cogs together on the freewheel. Shimano freewheels are disassemblable, but not officially. I've never seen a cassette with a lockring like that. Anyway, the take home message of my post was that the OP is better off consulting Sheldon and figuring out what he's dealing with himself, rather than listening to all the goofs like me on forums.

that's a really cool bike ('specially for free) but i'd turn it into a 1/6, not a ss. getting the gearing right is going to suck.

and yeah, sheldon is a good resource for this... i don't think the freehub/freewheel question is your biggest problem. i think you may have vertical dropouts and if you're going to need a tensioner, just run it 1 by 6.

you don't need a new crankset if you have a demel:evilgril:

if you follow the advice of most people on here you'll end up with this:

which is cool, but it's not as cool as this:

which is essentially what you could have if you spend your money on a seven dollar can of degreaser instead of a thirty dollar tensioner and thirty dollar freewheel and on and on and on.

which saves you money to spend on things that will make that bike way better and more enjoyable, like a wtb saddle and some nice riser bars, maybe a suspension fork.

if you are looking for something like the bianchi i linked to above, fine... but it's kind of a silly thing to invest in because you got that bike for free.

wow totally forgot i had this thread up. but here is a quick summary of what has happened since this post. money falls short, had to pay for college (bummer!) new car parts(eh) and now no job. the bike is stripped as of now. nothing really done. sorry i mislead you guys. now this thread is up and running. =D
