General Cycling Discussion - Buy a bike from Jenson?

I am looking at a road bike from Jenson, it comes with the pro build service
They said I would have to install the handle bar and wheel. I think I can handle that.

Has anyone bought a bike from Jenson before and how well was it assembled/tuned/packaged?

To put it in a box a lot of fine tuning goes off, if it was ever done,
If You are buying a single speed .. never mind ..

The best prices are from just marking up the unopened carton,
then the rest of the work is up to the retail customer.

But if you buy from the LBS many more services after the sale are available..

Never bought a bike from them but do a lot of other business with them. Good company and good prices. But I know someone that did and what he said was they put it together, test everything out and adjust everything (shifting), then just remove the handlebars and wheels. Should be a piece of cake to get going.

Someone I worked with bought a bike from them. Loves it. A singlespeed. He also knows how to work on bikes. If you are not as handy with bikes, bring it to a shop to have it looked over. Good chance that it will cost ya though. If it is a multispeed bike. the biggest thing I would worry about is to make sure that the rear derailleur limit stop screws are set right so the rear derailleur doesn't shift into the spokes of your wheel which can mess up the wheel, derailleur, derailleur hanger, chain, and frame.

I know some basics to check on derailleur limits but not too experienced with the set screws. I did my first FD set up from scratch yesterday though.

I am ready to pay a local mechanic to follow up for me.

They told me they take it all apart and assemble it and tune the derailleurs. That's the "pro build" they normally charge $100 for.
I guess if somehow the derailleur got crushed on during shipping then it could mess things up.

I'd forgo the $100 pro build from Jenson and save it for when you take it to your LBS after you receive the bike.

I got a free pro build offer from JensonUSA and it worked out fine, in 2008. The bike works great.

They don't actually charge you for the build. It's just marketing.

I bought my Cross Check from Jenson two years ago, and it was simple to put together and ride. I found no problems with any of the fine-tuning, and the only adjustments needed were things having to do with my own size and comfort.

My only complaint was that they did not require a signature, so the carrier left the package at my front door. I sent an email to the company to complain about that, and they replied that they'd have covered it through their insurance. I don't know if they still do this, but I suggest asking them to require a signature anyway.
