I might be wrong, but I was under the impression that 29'r wheels are actually 700c. Can anyone either confirm or disprove this?

I was under the same impression, maybe wider wheels (to fit wider tires), but the same diameter.

29'r refers to MTB so I would assume he is referring to that.

We have Fandango 29r built as a 2x9. great bike.

Wow, just got off the phone with Alex at mtbtandems.com two days ago. We are considering a full suspension 29'er Ventana tandem. I went 29'er on my single MTB, and wonder why anyone else hasn't done that yet. Alex said most sold now are 29'er. I wonder why all are not 29'er since unweighting the front is a bit of a challenge on a MTB tandem.

I wonder why more bikes are not 650Bs. Many people are not tall enough for good fit on 29ers.
650B has advantages over the 26" 559 wheel.
Rawland and some others are making 650Bs that take advantage of the smaller wheels in their design. Others use the same jigs and the angles are the same as their 29ers and 700c bikes.

For off road much of it has to do with tire choices. It took a long while for aggressive 29r tires to be made. Once available, it opened the gates to the 29r being more mainstream.
I do agree, 29 makes a bike very tall. For us we prefer the 29 for open terrain xc riding, anything technical does better on 26. Plus the 26 is less effort to steer.
