I'm new to forums like this, and was surprised that most people don't use their real name. My kids use fake names on the computer, but it's for their own safety. Am I missing something obvious? I started thinking, "Maybe I should make up a fake name, too", but I could not think of a good reason to, except maybe that it would be fun. Is that it? If I were to re-register with a different name, would I become a Newbie again?

Sometimes you just pick up a moniker…. at school, work, the service or at the bike shop and it just sticks.
What did the enlisted call you behind your back? We might want to us that one. Or not.

I don't think it makes a lot of difference. Even if somebody is claiming to be posting under their real name, none of us know for sure that this actually is their real name -- nor does it suddenly give their opinions any more or less credibility than they had before. As far as I'm concerned, people should just post under whatever moniker they'd prefer, and leave it at that.
I suppose safety, especially for women. I know at least one poster on another board who wouldn't be on-line at all if she couldn't use a screen name. She has a rather psycho ex looking for her. She's always very carefull not to post anything that might hint at her location or identity.
In my case, I post on a number of forums and zoogirl is short and easy to recognize. My first name is fairly common.
Thanks for the advice, WorldWind, Chris L and zoogirl. I guess I'm just forum-challenged. I think I'm going to re-register under a different name, if can figure out how. Whenever I go o the forum, it automatically recognizes me and logs me on. How do you get back to the registration screen?

with some jobs you have to be careful about publishing your personal opinions on the net- like if you are a judge or something- using a fake name means you can be more honest than if everything you write could later be held against you

That's cool. Funny, but after changing my name, I don't feel any less real. But is sure is more fun being JavaMan than it was being the other guy. :D

several years ago, when this was new as a mass media; handles
were just what people did. I picked rninl8 (running late) as my handle. When I started playing an internet based air combat game called Warbirds; I had a problem. Guys could warn you someone was sneaking up behind you by typing 'Rninl8 check 6'.
They also typed to say that typing my handle was a pain in the butt. So I needed a shorter handle that was easier to type. Well, you can see how I went from rninl8 to just plain late. The odd thing is that 'late' is perfect. After I picked I was thunderstruck how well it defined me and my life. Ce le guerre.
Gus Riley is the moniker I picked up in the Service...it stuck. I use it on all other forums I'm a member of.

It goes back to BBSing in the 80s.
Most people went by aliases then (it was part of the fun of entering the "computer world" so to speak.) Plus, since most of the people on the BBS were local, if you used your real name it was easy for them to look you up in the phone book and harrass you. :/ It happened. Also, since we were limited to 8-12 characters for our logins, it was better to pick something like "nolageek" than something like vmacal12.
I've went by a few, including TheD0CT0R, Dead Air, and now nolageek. You kinda picked something that went along with your personality and or the theme of the BBS you were calling.
This carried on to USENET and eventually the web and now the web versions of BBS, which is what this is. :)

I've actually had people ask me if my real name is indeed "Opie". My nick has lots of meanings, whereas my real name (steve) is too common.
JavaMan says a lot more about you and is more fun than Tom. Plus, JavaMan is easier to identify you on the boards than Tom.

I guess they don't use their real names for the same reason they don't list a location.
I think it gives you the chance to say something about yourself too. I might be a dull office worker, but on my bike, I'm only half as dull.
