from what i've heard there aren't too many at that price that are substantially better than any other options.

i like my ritchey speed max but there are also some conti speed king cross at my lbs right now(recycled cycles in seattle) for 25 a piece, which i've heard are better.

i had kenda redline cross supreme on for a few days and hated how they handled on anything but mud. they grip in mud really well. i wasn't expecting much for a ten dollar tire.

What kind of tread pattern should I be looking at?

Tread pattern depends on course conditions. Since you're in Washington, you probably want a mud tire.

I've heard from a few guys locally who love the Clement Crusade PDX (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=37327&category=180). I use the Michelin Mud2 (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=7577&category=180) and am very happy with those.
