Northeast - Poll for (slightly) more East Coast regions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Who thinks Mid-Atlantic should have its own regional discussion forum?

While I'd hate to lose the input of any of our current members, I must say that I really appreciate being able to post a question here knowing that virtually all of the responses will be from people who know the same exact roads I do. It hasn't been a problem for me filtering the few posts from members in the Mid-Atlantic region, but if Mid-Atlantic people want the same guarantee I have every time I come here, I say give 'em a group of their own. But we'll miss you.

I very rarely come to the Regional Discussions area of the forum, mostly because I often find it... not really 'difficult', but sometimes a bit time-consuming, to find posts that relate to my area. Currently, we have the metropolises (metropoli? Metropoles?) of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington all vying for space here, not to mention all the rural areas of the North-eastern states. That's a huge area with a huge population and a lot of very different cities and very different regional issues and cultural differences that come into play. I would welcome a slight increase in the number of forums devoted to East Coast issues. But that's just my perspective.

If there is a split, of course it probably means we'll have to figure out whether NY is Mid Atlantic or Northeast. I'd vote for Northeast, but that's just me, and I'm a foreigner, so what would I know about it.

I just noticed that the Northeast region forum covers about one and a half times the number states of any other regional forum, so in terms of population, regions like the Great Lakes, Texas and the Northwest get much more focused coverage. This is a big reason I find the Northeast regional discussion forum frustrating. When I come here, I have to search through the messages looking for items that are local for me, which are very few and far between. If we had a forum that was more focused, I wouldn't have to search so much and would probably come here more often.

Maybe others here don't find this a bother. I don't know.

It's not like there is an overwhelming number of posts here. I check this forum like once/week just to see if there is anything interesting for my area (metro Philly)....so overall I am pretty neutral about refining the regions....and I don't even know if my area would be mid-atlantic or northeast....

If there is a Mid-Atlantic region, what will it cover? NYC to DC?

This request crops up every few months. In the end, no one expresses enough interest for the mods to actually bother. I also suspect there just isn't enough activity to justify yet another subforum.

Maybe if everyone in the MD area posted into MORE THAN ONE THREAD, the current divisions might make a little more sense. ;)

Hey now! We here in the Land of Pleasant Living really  our "MD people's" thread, endearing mis-punctuation and all. :p

But seriously, although it was revived from dormancy as almost somewhat of a local in-joke among a relative handful of Baltimore-area riders who know and ride with each other "in real life," that thread has become for a larger, ever-growing group the de facto "sub-regional" forum that's necessary because "Northeast" is just too big and diverse a grouping. Maryland isn't a big place, and many of us do fairly often ride throughout much of what would probably be minimally considered a "mid-Atlantic" region (MD, VA, NJ, PA, DC.) So I expect a lot of us would probably be willing to frequent a "mid-Atlantic" subforum if one were created.

I check all the recent thread titles on the Northeast forum, and will pop in when one seems interesting to me.

Dude.

It's 270 PAGES LONG.

It's not "necessary." You guys just need to get out more often.

Maryland should have it's own subforum.

DC riders don't seem to post much. I started a thread about DC over a year ago and I keep bumping it, but it's attracted few participants. It's interesting that the MD thread was revived by people who already rode together in real life. I think DC riders are similar, more real life riders than virtual riders.

If you look at the thread, it's all about getting out more often. Those guys ride in real life.
