Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - civic duty calls

I met up with a person to go for a ride yesterday. About 10 miles in we see a guy standing next to a pickup truck on the other side of the highway trying to wave traffic down. As we went past i yelled across the road do you need help.
he said he was out of gas and he was trying to get ( somewhere) to see his daughter.
I ask if he wanted the police and he replied he didn't because he had warrents out on him.
he had a cell phone, Well dummy call a wrecker i thought

Don't call the police because he had warrents rang in my head as we pulled away i reached into my pocket for my cell to call the police.
This is where it get weird.
The object was to aleart police to a possible robery attempt or worse or just somone who needed help. The turck had the windshield smashed ,side windows were broken and the rear bumper was bent up. ( like it had been rolled)
What i got was a bunch of questions from the dispacher about the guys medical condition. No he wasn't bleading, no he was talking, no I didn't see the little girl. And a whole bunch more questions. I trying to ride my bike and deal with these questions. Finally i stopped riding and got a cross street for them.

Just off of the phone I see an ambulance roll by lights and noise maker, then a fire truck lights and noise maker, then the police roll by no lights no noise maker. I point west ( we were heading east)

a few minutes later the emergency units came rolling by again east bound.
Did the guy run, when he heard the emergency vehicles, and had gas??

Well if the guy was trying to rob someone and did have gas the noise makers from the emergency vehicles just alerted him and he drove off.
If he was out of gas he should have still been there within the time frame of the call.

on our way back an hour and change later no sign of him.

Weird.

That's a bizarre story. I wonder what that guy was up to. If he rolled the car, he may have been in shock, and not thinking clearly?

I was driving cross-country once, in a car that (unbeknownst to me) had trouble with altitude. It broke down in the Bighorn mountains in Wyoming. An old couple drove by, pulled over, and offered me a jump-start, then asked if I'd like them to "telephone a highway patrolman." I told them no, that who I needed help from was a mechanic, and they wished me luck as they headed off on their way. In retrospect, I hope I didn't scare them!

Definitely weird. You did the right thing by contacting the police. However I'm not clear on what you said. You told them he had warrants and was trying to rob someone or that he is a stranded motorist who rolled his vehicle? Did you call the local police or 911?

When I called the police (local) they just asked what happened and that they would send a car by.

When I first saw the guy his truck was on the oppsite side of the road ( 3 lane highway) He was trying to flag oncomming traffic ( west bound) by waving his arms across each other over his head.
As we rolled up i ask do you need help he replyed he was out of gas. he volenteered he was trying to go see his daughter.

i ask do you want police then he replyed No ,with kinda wry smile ,he had warrents.
we stopped and i asked if he had a cell he replyed yes

As I looked at where he was standing, at the back of the truck, and not moving away from it i considered he may have a wepon. Then i started noticing damage to the rear bumper then damage to the scape marks and dents then the 1/2 cab window was broken then the driver side window was broken or rolled down. I could see through the drivers door window that the windshield was shatered on the passenger side.

I don't think he damaged the truck at that location. it could have been envolved in an accident earlier that day or weeks ago.

I started rolling out at the mention of the word cell phone. 100 feet down the road i was dialing 911 to report the Dude. The dispacher could not grasp what i was reporting i.e. a guy trying to flag down traffic with a busted up truck out of gas who claimed to have warrents. Dispatch transfered me to ambulance and kept asking all sorts of medical question. They had me so ingrossed answering medical questions that i missed telling dispach about the first cross street.

Finally i stopped at the second cross street and put took the phone away from my ear and told the riding partner this is nuts.
Dispatch let me hang up after that.

If the guy wasnt there, when the ambulance/police went by, he had gas.


Seattle Forest I have people ask me on every ride if i am ok. Some very prominant posters at bike forums have doubts about me.

I was in the port authouity bus terminal in new york city waiting for a bus. This was during the gas shortage about 1972. i tried to take a nap and the beat office warned me about sleeping. So on the his next round he tied to hit my foot with his baton. I had one eye open just enough to see the swing and i moved my foot that was stretched out in front of me. Just in time to watch him loose his ballance and almost fall into my lap. His partner about busted out laughing
