Would love to do the Etape this year. Just not sure if it's going to work out. We'll see. :)

I don't like this year's arrangement. To me the attraction L'Etape is get to do a full stage of the TDF with conditions as close as they can be to the actual stage. And it needs to be one of the epic mountain stages.
So the L'Alpe de Huez option misses the criteria because its not a full stage
And the St Flour stage doesn't meet the Epic criteria.
Unless you go to L'etape on a recurring basis, I'd skip this one.
And if the attraction is doing the Telgraph, Galibier, and L'Alpe, La Marmotte may be a better option

Actually, that is the full stage for Alpe d'Huez. It's just a short stage this year. Otherwise, I agree with everything else.

Ok, I misread the bit about not wanting to start in Italy, but that was in reference to the other stage that will do the Galibier.
Still at 109km not really a classic L'Etape stage even with the Galibier and L'Alpe de Huez.
Whe L'Etape did the L'Alpe de Huez, and the Col d'Izoard in 2006, the stage was 191km.
