Right, hi everyone - new to the forums and new to biking so please don't mock me too much for not knowing all the terminology etc
Bought an old bike today. There were two there - a Raleigh Record which I was tempted by as I obviously knew the name - and an old one at the back that I was just drawn to. I've never ridden a road bike before and it was lovely to ride. Bought it for £20 and rode it 6 miles home. Very sore crotch now but I'm guessing it takes time to get used to those seats! Lovely to ride though - and so fast compared to mountain bikes.
Right it says Carlton Criterium on it. Serial number is hard to make out, but it looks like WG9S00521, which according the wikipedia means it was made in Worksop 1979 May. Says Worksop on the front too.
It's got Suntour gears, Raleigh bits all over it but the whole bike is badged as a Carlton. Mallard quick release front hub, Weinman Raleigh 610 brakes. I don't know where to look to find out about this Reynolds 531 business - can't see it written on the bike anywhere....
Condition is probably pretty poor, and only the rear gears work due to a snapped front gear cable. But assuming (as I always do with old stuff) I get it back to very good condition and keep it all original, is this a good bike? It's definitely worth the £20 (approx $35) to me, as it's nice to ride.
Just interested to know a rough value and if it's a well regarded bike. And I'll look forwards to posting more on here - if you're nice to me :)
