Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Quick Question

I just bought some sugino messengers that have a crappy paint job on the chain ring. How would you guys suggest i remove the paint completely to the bare metal? Is paint thinner safe to use??

Aircraft stripper. Can be found at Wal-Mart.

Is it painted or anodized?

If its anodized, use easy off oven cleaner.

its painted on with some cheap spray paint. I think i'll go the aircraft remover route, i hear good things about it. thanks for the advice man

I'm assuming you bought them used and the previous owner spray painted the chainring. If that's the case, removing the paint most likely won't take off the original anodized finish (unless the ring was silver to begin with). If it's colored under the paint, you'll need oven cleaner to remove that.

Yeah the chainring was previously white. So aircraft remover will only remove the spray paint?? and once the spray paint is off will the original paint still look clean or will the aircraft remover damage it?

i dont think air craft remover affects anodizing. i could be wrong....does a great job at removing all kinds of paint, great for stripping a frame's paint.

HOWEVER, i am curious myself about removing anodizing....
now, i have tried oven cleaner on a black stem laying around, and although it did most of it off, the job was kind of spotty.

anybody have any advice on removing anodizing? anything that does an amazing job?

was thinking about turning my black miche supertype into a silver ;p

Steel wool may do the trick however I have not tried it just an idea.

You can't Anodize white. So the paint stripper/aircraft remover is likely to remove, or at least damage both layers of coating. If the white is a powder coat, which I suspect it is, a less volatile paint remover may leave it unharmed.

they do make "environmentally safe" paint remover. i tried to use it on a frame and it barely worked. that stuff MIGHT remove the spray paint and not the powdercoat.....buuuut thats a big MIGHT.....

illd - after you remove an anodized finish with oven cleaner, you still need to use polishing compound or at least a few different grades of fine steel wool to shine it up.
