Mountain Biking - MTB Noobie - Looking For A New Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My first post in the MTB forum.

I have started to look at 'supplementing' my road biking with a mountain bike and will also want to take it away to places like the Snowy Mtns (Aussie), along with the road bike, so I can get some extra fitness and generally improve my overall riding ability.

The mtb would be used on fire trails and horse trails - no heavy duty stump busting, cliff jumping, downhilling etc.

Here are a couple of bikes I'm looking at (prices in Aus dollars), and I was hoping that you guys would have some comments on what you think of the bikes and which you would recommend:

2011 Trek 4300 Disc ($799.00) - http://www.trekbikes.com/au/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/4_series/4300discz/

2011 Trek 4500 Disc ($999.00) - http://www.trekbikes.com/au/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/4_series/4500disc/

2010 Haro Flightline Comp ($999.00) - http://www.harobikes.com/mtb/tab2_subNav3.php

2010 Malvern Star XCS 5.0 ($999.00) - http://www.malvernstar.com.au/range/bike-2605.aspx

2011 Giant Talon 2 ($999.00) - http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-AU/bikes/model/talon.2.black/7389/44227/

2010 Avanti Montari 3 ($900.00) - http://www.avantibikes.com/cross-country/montari3.aspx?bid=386

Thanking everyone in advance........

With that lineup I would go with the Haro, just for the parts spec on it.

Thanks Danni for your reply. I ended up going for the 2011 Trek 4500 Disc and got a good discount (20%) on it from my LBS (and they also included these pedals and shoes in the deal - Au$150 more). I've purchased everything to do with my road bike from them and also get it serviced there as well, so they look after me (thankfully) - I've also recommended them to other people that mention to me that they are interested in getting into cycling.

Bike (Matte Onyx) - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/4_series/4500disc/
Pedals - http://www.shimano.com.au/publish/content/global_cycle/en/au/index/products/pedals/mountain/product.-code-PD-A530.-type-pd_mountain.html
Shoes - http://www.shimano.com.au/publish/content/global_cycle/en/au/index/products/shoes/mtb/product.-code-SH-MT42NV.-type-.html

I made an error on the Haro - it was the Flightline Three, not the Comp..... The shop only had a copy of the specs for the Comp, but wrote " F-L Three" and the Three price on the paper (my bad).
