In the process of overhauling an old road bike with new parts, currently at the wheel set. I have already disassembled the old hubs and freewheel in preparation to re-grease and replace the bearings when a friend found this post on CL (link below it for the pictures)

He is a pretty bike savvy guy who does most of his own work so I DO trust him, but figured I would try and get other opinions since it is still a learning process for me.

My question is: is it a (good) deal? Or should I pass and keep working on the current ones I have/ keep looking?

Not that bad of deal considering the cassette and tires. I'd check to see how much wear is on the rim though. If hardly any, then the price is decent, but if the wear is noticeable I'd talk him down to $220-240, if a lot of wear, I'd pass and if you don't like the tires and don't need it. I'd talk him down to $200.

Personally, I'd rather get buy a brand new Mavic Askium Race wheel which can be had for around $200.

It's important to know the specifics of the wheelset you're considering replacing. IOW, you may already have a great wheelset that just needs a little tweaking.

Araya 27 x 1 1/4 wheels
Sunshin hubs

Andddd..I dont know what else to add or what other information is needed beyond what I can (barely) read off the parts

You may have some issues going from a 27" wheel to 700C. Also, your rear spacing may not be compatible since many 27s were no more than 126mm whereas the rear of the Mavic is probably 130mm.

That's what I was thinking too.

Everything on a bike works together. I've found that you can almost never upgrade just one part. Every time that I've tried to do that I've had to buy something else to make it work. This particular wheelset looks to me like it could be the poster child for that issue.

One other thing. While $275.00 might be a good price for that wheelset, do you really want to turn a cheap old bike into an expensive old bike?
