BMX - how do you remove this ******** shelco freewheel

then wouldnt it make sense to put the freewheel in a bench vise, tighten it, and turn it clockwise, because thats the way it says its supposed to come off, and it will turn that way cuz thats how most freewheels turn? i dont care about the freewheel at all, i just need to take it off to put on a 16T one. cuz i did all that, but it wouldnt come off, it felt as if the hub part of the rim was flexing.

probably, or maybe im just ********. rust probably killed it....... any suggestions on how to remove, cuz i tried it the logical way and now im out of ideas... and as you can see, it clearly says to remove it clockwise (which hasnt worked...) help!!!!!!!!

The Tool Will Make It Alot Easier

The way your freewheel spins is the way it is also removed. The freewheel removal tool fits on those two little cut outs inside your freehwheel and locks into them, then you can just use a wrench to twist the freewheel off the hub.

Though... I gotta say if those are the wheels/rims you are using - it would cost less to get better rims than to buy the removal tool.

no, its not really messsed up like it looks, thats just all the paint that i was taking off and its peeling, so it looks like someone took bites out of it, but its perfectly smoothe and straight and everything else. well, yeah, which way does it turn? (to take it off)

right did a little searching, Haro Rider is right, you need the tool, apprently 2 options;
1) top tip I saw ( http://www.bmxonline.com/bmx/tech_help/article/0,15737,381658,00.html)
get bench, clamp freewheel tool in vice, put wheel on top, ( slots in freewheel onto tool) and spin it round , same way as arrow.
2) or try tool & add pipe extension to your spanner for extra leverage

1. You have mags, so they are messed up - no matter what you say, mags are not used by any rider anymore for one very simple reason. They suck. I am not a person to say that lightly - but it is like a $100.00 bike from Wal-Mart - it sucks... Mags suck, period. You can't get HP in them, they flex to high hell, and when they snap, and they WILL, you are done riding until you get a new wheel. Forget your brakes working as well - it doesn't happen.

2. Get a freewheel remover (as you have been told ten times) - then put it in those two notches in your freewheel and unscrew it the normal direction you would unscrew stuff (counter-clockwise). Or, go to your LBS and have them take it off for you. They will happily charge you 5 or 10 bucks to remove it so you don't have to buy the $10.00 tool yourself.

I don't care about that because the bike is just to ride. :( I"m giving it to my little brother anyways, so I don't really care. And it WASN'T a Wal*Mart bike, it was from a GT Performer, so yeah... but are you serious that it'll cost less to get better rims than it would for a removal tool (according to you, that would be under 10 dollars)....... so to end it all, it goes counter clockwise, contradicting what it says on the freewheel?

No, I am not 100% certain it is counterclockwise - I haven't taken a freewheel off in at least 12 years.... But, only if it is Left Side Drive should it be clockwise removal.

ok, i just decided to go the other (counterclockwise) way becuase following what the freewheel said wasnt working, and after hammering away at it with a nail and hammer( i put it into the little hole) it slowly came off. so, yeah, its not my fault the freewheel mislead me........ and even if i did have the tool to take it off, it would be useless becasue the little notches are all worn down, so it wouldnt fit right and would just slide off...... thanx though

My guess (just a guess) is that the flat plate that says 'unscrew' on it, actually comes off and reveals some of the guts on the inside of the freewheel. So, to remove that plate, you would use a tool that fits into the small round holes on the plate itself (a spanner wrench?) and it will unscrew in the direction of the arrows.

So, it misleads you, but in fact, you now know how to remove a freewheel. The hammer and screwdriver method only works SOMETIMES though. I have actually ripped a hub in half doing it with the correct tool, a hammer and screwdriver wouldn't do a thing for it.
