Bicycle Mechanics - Is this rear mech any good ?

I've been looking for a derailleur for one of my projects.

It's described as a Suntour XCR650 and might be the same as the RD-XCR650-SGX which looks the same but with a different cage (google results).

Anyway, has anyone used one of these ?

The Suntour XCR650 arrived today.

It will be a while before I can try it as it's for a tandem that is only partly built atm.

The jockey wheels are hube and so is the cage.

Cable routing is a little strange and apparently there are two possiblities giving different amounts of pull, the small piece of paper that is supposedly a multi-language manual is a bit lacking in detailed information.

Seems well built and might even be something of a bargain....

SunTour was a Japanese company that produced some of the finest bicycle compnents ever made. SR SUNTOUR is a Taiwanese company that bought the rights to the name and has produced a lot of bicycle parts, some of which are fairly decent.

Generally, as long as there's not a lot of slop in any of the pivots or where the pulley cage meets the right link, it'll work just fine.

Hi. Just purchased this mech.on ebay, 'Buy It Now' sale. Having wasted time discovering two cabling routes, one (the obvious one) ESP actuation ratio (1:1), the other Shimano actuation ratio (2:1), I now find that my Shimano Rapidfire shifters won't operate the mech over the full (9 speed) sweep. The shifter experiences increasing resistance from 1-8, and won't operate to 9 at all, although the mech.itself will move to that position if I physically shove it. (The stop screw is properly set.) I've tried it with now three different Rapidfire shifters, one new XTR - exactly the same problem in each case. The accompanying SR Suntour leaflet shows operation by Twist shift, which has a larger actuating barrel, so maybe it would work with that type of shifter - maybe it's designed only for that type of shifter. Anyone else experiencing the same problems, or do I have a duff unit? (The ebay suppliers are no help.) Cheers.

I think you've established it's not really Shimano compatible.

Either that, or you've failed to mention something... are you sure the shifters you've tried match the cassette you're trying to shift on?

SunTour was a Japanese company that produced some of the finest bicycle compnents ever made.

They did a clamp-on Superbe front derailleur that was actually tidier than a braze-on. Unfortunately I can't find any pics, but it gets mentioned in this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?694564-how-to-remove-suntour-superbe-front-derailleur-clamp). Also, get a load of the braze-on one - it allows separate adjustment of angle FTW: http://www.flickr.com/photos/steel-is-real/2727155442/

I worked out a quick test method - connect the shifter (off-bike) to the mech (also off bike) via a 6" outer cable, this ensuring there was no chain resistance, etc. (there now being no chain, etc.). Turning the shifter(s) produced just the effect descibed, each step of the shifter being matched by the corresponding step in the derailleur, but with increasing resistance up to position 8, and it wouldn't go over to 9 without manually moving the derailleur into that position first. (All three Shimano rapidfire shifters, exactly same result.) The same set up with my XT mech (M971) (again off-bike) and no problems - derailleur followed the shifter fine, all the way up to position 9. (Thank god for upper end shimano. Used to avoid it like the plague, fearing Microsoft/Shimano/Tesco world domination, but now a devotee.)

You might try an LX or Deore RD if you really want compatibility.

Unable to comment, other than the rear mech looks ok.

I'm going to use it on a tandem I'm building with non-index bar end shifters, so compatibility wasn't a purchase requirement.....

I've only just got the wheels assembled, but will be fitting them soon. After that I'll be fitting bars, seats, gears etc and then measuring up the gear/brake outers and hopefully completing the build.

It might not be as simple as that as I have to find some suitable BBs to get my timing cranks to line up.....
