Training & Nutrition - How to get (much) better?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

this weekend i rode in a century ride, and while i knew i was going to
finish, i was truely blown away by the 'fast' group of riders. i've mtn.
biked for many years and am not terribly out of shape etc.. but i cannot
even begin to imagine how to improve myself to get to their level. Should
i just ride a lot? Heck, i've been riding!! Help!!! :)

if you want to ride that fast, then you have to ride that fast during your training rides. if you build speed through leg strengthening exercise and ride a lot then you will go faster.... then faster & longer. you've got to build up to it.

You also need to train smarter. Find out your VO2 max, use a heart rate monitor, and train to increase your threshold. Oh ya, buy one of the books that sets all this stuff out plainly.
Once you have built up a good solid base, I think that many will agree that intervals are a good way to help. Yes, the technical toys can help, if you use them and know how. Otherwise the best advise I ever got was "ride as hard as you can until you can't, then ride easy until you can ride hard again".

I can't recommend Chris Carmichael's book The Ultimate Ride enough. Using the training concept of 'Periodization', one first builds up the aerobic engine, then works on other areas like anearobic threshold, lactate threshold, etc. Great book.
