Bicycle Mechanics - Speedplay pissing me off a bit

I think Speedplay makes a pricey but excellent product.

I use their 'Frog' pedals on a couple of my bikes and have been pleased with the product.

On one of the pedals, the 'crown' which is the little metal ring with 2 little tabs that attach to the cleats, is wearing out, and my foot comes out of the pedal inadvertently.

They don't sell that part. You have to buy a $40 rebuild kit. Rip off when all you need is a $.50 item.

If it is that part, you can try removing it and replacing it 180 deg from its original position on the pedal. This should work because only the leading edge rests against the cleat's "clip." by "clip" i mean that little square piece with the 4 dots toward the front of the cleat. IDK if that's the correct term for the part.

OTOH, it's probably that "clip" . You can use a couple layers of masking tape to add a bit of thickness under that clip. It will push the clip outward a bit more as the springy plastic material looses some of it's spring.

I'm a Frog fan too having them on three bikes and having worn out two pair in the past as over 30,000 miles each. My only objection is Speedplay's unwillingness to sell even the simplist replacement part directly and insisting you go through a dealer.

Buy the rebuild kit, If you have used them enough to wear out the metal ring the bearings re mot likely shot also.

The only problem I have ever had with them was pedal stike and I cracked the body of one. One quick phone call and I had the part in a couple of days. I for one am happy with their customer service

The problem with the rebuild kits (there are two, the bearings and the shells) is they are priced so high that new pedals, which include new cleats, are not much more.

You have had better customer service than I have. Calls to Speedplay for minor parts have always had them tell me to go through a dealer, and the dealers often don't stock them.
