Bicycle Mechanics - need help. dont know what skewer size i need and no clue how they measure skewers

i have an old i think italian bike. on the outside of the dropouts it measures 130mm. the axle measures 132 in length. the inside of the dropouts measure 123mm. what length quick release axle do i need. i see people measuring them all different ways. my local bike ship couldnt even help me haha. i bought some shimano ultrega 6700's on ebay, and the front works. the seller claimed for road bike, 100 front and 135 rear. i measure with the nut threaded on flush where the quick release axle sticks out 1mm or so and the inside measurement is 145mm. does this mean it is a 145mm skewer? if not what is this skewer? 175404175405175406

all skewers are the same size. front or back . sometime the skewer 's end will poke thou the nut when it tighten which is normal.

NO they are not all the same size. front skewers are for the most part the same but the rear... I suspect the OP has and older 126mm hub so a modern skewer for a 130 or 135 hub may very well be too long. but if there is enough thread it can be used

I have a set of locking skewers I bought off epay and the rear is too short for a '89 XT rear hub.

to: OP go to a different bike shop and ask if they have a box of older skewers you can look through. look for a rear Malliard, Ofmega, Suze something like that should fit OK

FYI, this is the current standard for outer locknut dimension (OLD) of MTB. Road is 100 front, 130mm rear.

I'm having trouble understanding the problem, so rather than respond to it, hopefully this will help.

If these things are true, then everything is fine:
-Rear hub fits in between the dropouts.
-Hub axle does not protrude past the outside of either dropout.
-All the threads of the quick release nut engages the threads of the QR skewer when QR is properly tightened.

It doesn't matter if the skewer sticks out past the nut a bit as long as there are enough threads left to engage the nut's threads.

no the quick release is fully tightened down, and is really loose. i work at a machine shop and made a spacers, so now it works. when they say a skewer is for 130mm spacing on a hub, do they mean the length of the axle for one end to the other? maybe i'm misunderstanding everything.

130mm is the Over Locknut Distance (OLD) of the axle assembly and is also the spacing or distance between the inside surfaces of the rear dropouts.
The length of the axle is longer than the Over Locknut Distance. The ends of the axle cannot stick out beyond the outer surfaces of the dropouts.
