I have what I'm guessing to be an early 90's Rockhopper frame and fork. I found them minus the headset in the local scrap pile. I'm sure they belong together due to the same paint and "Direct Drive" logos for the frame material.
The fork extends well past the head tube top tube and is not threaded with a (rusty) star nut installed. After googling the bike, I found no mention of 1" headsets so I ordered a Cane Creek S3 1 1/8th.
Here's the issue though. The cups of the S3 line up with the headtube, EG they don't "slip" in at all, or even sit on the edge. I measured the steering tube and it's roughly 1 inch across. All the included spacers have "wiggle" room on the steering tube.
Did I buy the wrong headset? Or is something else odd here?
