Vacation spot friendly for biking?

Hi gang,

I'm looking to hop on a vacation soon and would like to survey some spots may suite me.

Anybody recommend places that are:

1) temperature in the 60s 70s 80s?
2) great views? Enough variety of routes to satisfy a 4 day stay?
3) not too isolated so if I have a bike failure, I'm not too stranded?
4) also some great stuff to do when I'm not biking?

PS: Any good tips on transporting a bike on a plane?

San Francisco, if you already DON'T live there, north across THE bridge,(no other bridge counts) eastbay, across the other bridge cept u have to take BART, or south maybe to Monterey, along Pacific Coast Hwy
I'm heading there this weekend to ride down to Malibu 8-10 days
Taking my bike in a bike bag I used in Europe this summer, it traveled well and no damage, pedals and seat off, handlebars turned parallel to frame and gears padded
Domestic Fla. to SF about 80$ each way

I may have spoken to soon ck out the ride on this thread, A Fall Ride reads like a winner and I kinda thought u may be living in SF, the Fillmore was a dead givaway

If you want to go to the east coast, Hilton Head Island has loads of pathways. 40 miles of public pathways and almost that many more in planned devlopments, and many places to stay and rent bikes. 99% of all rentals are single speed beach crusiers, but hybrids are avalible from a few places. Fall temps are usually high 50s at night to mid 80s during the day. The island was spared from any damage from the barrage of hurricanes and tropical storms that have affected much of the Southeast.

I would suspect that ANY coastal/beach area that caters to tourim would be good.

I was in Maine about 4 weeks ago, In Wells, and York, and there were bike paths/lanes EVERYWHERE.

Lots of bike rentals, and bike lanes alone RT-1a.
Its is cleary pedestrian/bike friendly, as state law REQUIRES automobile traffic to yield to pedestrians/bikes in crosswalks etc.

Maine is probably in full color now, so it might be too late for a great fall trip, but Virginis and the Carolinas will be prime in a couple of weeks.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast between Bay St. Louis and Biloxi is very nice. You can ride your bike for miles and miles along the shore. Weather is pleasant this time of year and the hotel rates are cheap. The shrimp poor-boy sandwiches are outrageous.

There are casinos down there too if you like that.

Southern CA ... you don't even have to get on a plane; you could just drive on down. Didn't say if you're looking to road ride or mountain bike. Lots of both. For road riding, along the coast from Newport Coast (maybe as far north as Huntington Beach or Bolsa Chica) all the way down to San Diego ... excellent coastal riding. I love a route from Irvine, over Newport Coast, down to San Clemente train station, back through Laguna Niguel, Newport Back Bay, back to Irvine (about 70+ round trip, almost all of it along the Pacific coast). Lots of good moutain biking trails too: El Moro, Aliso & Woods, Whiting Ranch, Santiago Oaks, etc. I'm sure there's a gazillion places to ride in the La Jolla-Del Mar-San Diego area.

San Diegans ... chip in please!

Of course ... there's always the SD Zoo, Sea World, plus the usual theme parks in the LA area.
If you're REALLY brave, you could hit all the roller coasters at Magic Mountain (Valencia) ... then go try and ride a bike. Any bike.

Tucson is also a good option, in addition to the So Cal plug. Tucson is very bike friendly and depending on when you go in fall, it can still be warm, but not sizzling hot like the summer. Mt. Lemmon is great for climbing and you can inquire about routes at the local shops. Plus, plenty to do in town while you are not riding.

Another good option is Austin Texas for much of the same reasons I mentioned for Tucson. Both are college towns and would have some great options.

Last, but not least, another good option would be Athens, GA area if you are looking at the SE.
