Did a 25 mile ride today that I thought was going to be moderately tough but little did I know. I had not been down most of these roads, so I did not know the terrain. I just googled a route and went for it. It was much hillier then I thought it would be. Garmin says it was 25.34 miles, time was 2:18, with 1147ft elevation gain. I road my mountain bike and averaged 11mph. Did I mention 18mph headwind?

I have not been biking that long, but we did a 55 miler a couple weeks ago on a relatively flat rail trail. That was much easier. The thing that bothered me the most, however, was the traffic. All the roads except one had no bike lane and for the most part no shoulder to speak of. It was a bit unnerving at times trying to stay on the edge of the road with cars doing what they do on country roads. I am contemplating a road bike for longer distances, does one get use to the traffic? Oh and dogs!

I've been riding for over 30 years, and you think you're tired Ba-dum-bum. Anyway, I guess you do get used to the cars. But I think it's getting worse. I have cars pass me on blind corners with near head on results with other cars. Then they decide to cut back and cut me off. Cars and trucks that pass what seems like 6 inches from my handlebars. And occassionally get yelled at just for being on a back road.

I try to stay on the shoulder as well as I can. If I'm on a blind curve, I hold out my hand to signal to not pass if I think they are going to pass and I see a car coming the other way. Some people understand and give a wave when I motion to them it's OK to pass. Others blow right by honking and yelling and almost getting in an accident. Guess that 10 seconds or so it would have taken to wait is just too much.

I guess I have gotten somewhat used to it as I still ride.

Congrats - 25 miles on "actual roads" is quite an accomplishment. I usually ride roads (though quiet ones) as I dont get the same feeling of a ride on a flat tow-path or bike-path. There's something about the rolling roads scenario :)

Great Job!
