14 hours of traditional Japanese tattooing later... I have been wanting some form of this image on my leg for years and just havent either had the money or knew a person who did traditional japanese work. Anyway it hurt like nothing I have felt before... And yes I am a big sram fan...

by saying you're not passing judgment, you're passing judgment b/c you're implying that there is judgment which could/and is likely to be passed.

I wouldn't walk up to someone and say "not to pass judgment," but what's your favorite color?

BUT, I would, theoretically, walk up to someone and say "not to pass judgment, but when was the last time you took a shower?"

I can understand why someone would want to get a traditional Japanese style tattoo done with the traditional Japanese technique. This, however, makes no sense to me.

If you ask cyclist what a chain ring tattoo is, 9 out of 10 will say something other than this.

Traditional Japanese technique tattoo? Are you being initiated into the Yakuza? you gonna cut off the the tip of your pinky next?

If you're Japanese then I'm all for it , otherwise why? eh to each his own

on a another not, SRAM should be hooking you up for the free advertising

I've thought about getting a chain lube tattoo. Like when you're riding in shorts and you get that mark on your calf in the shape of the chainring...like a semicircle.

No, no and no. I am just a traditionalist when it comes to tattoos and I hate the guns. I believe your suposed to really feel the tattoo getting done and not having instant gratification. That and the connection between your artist and you. :)

Yea I thought about emailing Sram.

I don't think getting a tattoo via a gun is any less cred. I can appreciate liking the style but don't fool yourself into thinking that its somehow more legit.

Please bros, "machine," not "gun." This is about the biggest faux pas you could make when talking to a tattoo artist (that or saying how much you hate some genre of punk rock i.e. hardcore, grindcore, black metal, etc.).

I have a lot of tattoos but am supremely hesitant to get anything with the traditional Japanese method. It reminds me of the technique used by plastic surgeons when doing liposuction or boob jobs (yeah I watched Dr. 90210 back in 2005). Ramming poles into my body is just going....too....far. hahahaha

Yowza. I think it's spelled "Yakuza."

About the age question-- isn't it sociologically interesting to find out how old someone is who chooses to get a particular tatoo? Not that it proves anything one way or the other, but it's fun to fuel conjecture.

Anyway, what's judgemental about it?

Strange to get a traditional Japanese tattoo of a random component with a corporate brand on it (which isn't even Japanese, btw). Why not a tattoo of a Tektro brake lever or a Thomson seatpost, or how about a Nashbar touring frame?

I agree. Imagine yourself visiting some town in Nara, Japan. You may not be able to go to public paths with that crank tattoo. ... Then again, it is likely they can't read no English anyway. ...

The quality looks good, but I don't understand getting a nice big well done tat of something that isn't timeless by any means, and basically idolizes a corporation. There will be bigger/better/lighter/stronger Sram components in the future, at which point your ink will only be relevant to your connection to that specific component as a symbol - which I can't comment on but I would guess is limited.

It just seems too much about a product and not something that's personal or meaningful. imho.

As long as you like it (forever) that's all that matters.

Why?

You don't need to pay to get one of those; just let the chainring hit your leg.

Why does it have to be square taper and from 30 years ago to be timeless? In 30 years this to will be classic tech, or not. Bikes might pedal by mind power in 30 years LOL. I am sure there will be better cranks, there always is. For me this will be a bookmark of sorts of my life here and now. I have never regretted a single bit of ink, I may not always be as excited about it as I was the day I got it but it enables me to look back and smile in a way that few things can.
