So I finally got my bike back from the shop. They cut the fork a bit short for my taste (one spacer between me and a flush mounted stem) but It's ok. In fact to show how ok it is, I decided to ride about 80 miles through the fine city of Chicago just to be on the bike. While riding, Some stream-of-consciousness poetry was running through my head. As I remembered most of it, I decided I'd share.

When I'm on my bike, I have no fear.
I know these streets, and I have ridden them often.
My bike, she senses my fearlessness and urges me on, ever forward.

When I'm on my bike, the cares of the day melt like so many snowflakes.
Each revolution of the cranks is another worry that I have (for the moment) forgotten.

When I'm on my bike, nothing can stop me.
Except that stop light. I should probably stop there.

When I'm on my bike, no one judges me.
I'm just another kid dodging cars.

When I'm on my bike, there's no one telling me that I threw my life away.
There's no one there telling me I should have finished school.
No one telling me that my jeans are too tight and my hair is too long.
There is no one.

When I'm on my bike, no one bothers me.
Except that dude in the blue SUV that keeps trying to dodge potholes.
He's almost hit me three times.
But no one else bothers me.

When I'm on my bike, I'm happy. I'm free. What else is there?

Again, I just wanted to share my love for biking. Thanks for reading.

It takes balls to put one's self out there.

Thanks for sharing!

Out of interest - 80 miles through Chicago is that the city limits or some suburban cycling thrown in there too?

I don't think he meant in a straight line.

This is good stuff! Very similar things ring through my head when I ride. Unfortunatly, my undiagnosed ADD seems to keep me from holding onto it longer than my rides!

I can pretty much identify with everything you've said here, down to the bit about school and long hair.

All I want to do now is go for a ride.

I agree with you in that I almost forget about my lacking of a future when I'm riding my bike.

LOl no worries -I didn't think he did it all in a straight line, just curious cuz the Chicago suburbs go on for ever!

yeah I'm going to see them n about 3 weeks. Ever since last night in town came out I've used jimmy tango as a handle on and off.
thanks for the positive feedback. I kind of thought you were all gonna call me lame for this, or tell me that my writing sucks. After all, my wife is the writer not me.

We would call you lame if you came across like some poseur hipster trying to feign existential about his "epic ride".

Basically, if you were what this guy is satirizing: http://epicfixedgearridestowork.tumblr.com/

But being genuine isn't lame, so.

Neato. This is the first post of good substance on bfssfg in a while. I too can relate to pretty much all of it. I wish my town was big enough to ride 80 miles through. If I rode that far I'd have to go through 3 or 4!

that would certainly set the mood. nothing like some good beatnik style slam poetry to get the juices flowin
