So I finally got my bike back from the shop. They cut the fork a bit short for my taste (one spacer between me and a flush mounted stem) but It's ok. In fact to show how ok it is, I decided to ride about 80 miles through the fine city of Chicago just to be on the bike. While riding, Some stream-of-consciousness poetry was running through my head. As I remembered most of it, I decided I'd share.
When I'm on my bike, I have no fear.
I know these streets, and I have ridden them often.
My bike, she senses my fearlessness and urges me on, ever forward.
When I'm on my bike, the cares of the day melt like so many snowflakes.
Each revolution of the cranks is another worry that I have (for the moment) forgotten.
When I'm on my bike, nothing can stop me.
Except that stop light. I should probably stop there.
When I'm on my bike, no one judges me.
I'm just another kid dodging cars.
When I'm on my bike, there's no one telling me that I threw my life away.
There's no one there telling me I should have finished school.
No one telling me that my jeans are too tight and my hair is too long.
There is no one.
When I'm on my bike, no one bothers me.
Except that dude in the blue SUV that keeps trying to dodge potholes.
He's almost hit me three times.
But no one else bothers me.
When I'm on my bike, I'm happy. I'm free. What else is there?
