Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Jamis Sputnik Loving time, yah baby!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So, i've seen quite a few sputniks on the forum now so I think it may be okay to make a thread dedicated to this sick ass Bike. Here are a few of mine I snapped while waiting for pupusa's. I wrapped a punctured tube around my Top Tube for protection/get rid logos, I hate logos. But it's not quite done yet. anyway, heres some pics.

I was just about to say the same thing.
I concur on both points.
It's a 57.

Isn't the Beatnik frame hi-ten straight guage? Can you say SE Draft?

se draft, but 380$ vs 200.

What's wrong with the newest Sputnik, besides the inflated price? It looks better than the old ones with hundreds of logos.
It's all in the specs. Other then poorer quality steel on the Sputnik and beatnik in 2011. I wish I could find the Geo on a 2007 sputnik.

Reynolds 520 for $650? Other than the nicer rear dropouts, pedals and saddle, how is it better than a Kilo TT?

^ Well, 27.2mm seatpost, 1 1/8" fork and two sets of bottle mount?
I agree with you though...$650 for 520 is a bit too much.
Hey, can anyone tell me what this Geometry means? I finally found the Geo on the 2007 Sputnik
MODEL SIZE CENTER of BB to TOP of TT EFFECTIVE TT LENGTH HEAD TUBE ANGLE SEAT TUBE ANGLE CHAINSTAY WHEELBASE FORK RAKE BB HEIGH HEADTUBE STANDOVER
Sputnik 57cm 22.28/566 22.44/570 73.5˚ 73˚ 1 5.94/405 40.43/1027 1.57/40 10.83/275 5.59/142 32.28/820

the higher the head angle the steeper the geometry = less relaxed position.
higher ht/st is associated with track bikes. ex: 75/75
super high st is associated with time trial bikes. ex: 73/78
road: 73/73
touring bikes have slacker angles all around and longer wheelbases.
etc.

Rather relaxed geometry, very road-worthy frame.

I loved mine...great bike. I wish I had some pics of how it looked at the end. I put a few stickers on it, wrapped up a lot of the logos in electrical tape and had bullhorns with no brakes. It looked good.

dookie that's sexy as all get out. I feel like I'd get arrested for riding that in public. ''sir. This city frowns on doing that around the youth''
what kind of fork is that?
without a doubt thats the sexiest sputnik i've seen. I also now need another bike part I can't afford. I'm totally getting a woundup fork for my Sputnik and throwing the Easton on my next build.

Jamis should have gone the other way around and make the Sputnik Reynolds 853 and not 520. Can't find many 853 singlespeed/fixie frame bikes anywhere.

Those are some fancy brake levers!
Those are some fancy brake levers!

without a doubt thats the sexiest sputnik i've seen...
thanks. it came to me without wheels, but otherwise complete...built by a shop guy from a bare frame and his parts box. parts were better than oem but not remarkable and i sold literally everything except the frame, then put it together from *my* parts box (and wallet). campy carbon road crank + miche 1/8" ring works perfectly, volos wheels and phil cog round out the bling. only visible change since photo is all black tape. i also lost the tektro levers/caliper in favor of, uh, campy (silver chorus skeleton caliper is sweet!), but unless it's a closeup a brake pretty much looks like a brake.
in my opinion, the frame absolutely holds its own wearing this level of parts. the finish level is not exemplary (powercoat on the early ones, welds are not moots perfect), but the performance and value certainly are. TIGed 631 with investment cast ends and nice comfy cruising geometry for not a lot of cash. good to see so many others with drops/hoods...that's what this bike is for.
had jamis in fact gone 853, as was suggested previously, i would have been on one by now...same parts, just a frame swap. going the other way is criminal. grab up an older one while you can...
What are you sayin' about my bullhorns son?
I think the wheels are golden, I've always wondered how silver lower profile wheels would look. and you confirmed it'll look gorgeous.
I'm going to put some low pros, maybe box rims on my Sputnik, swap the RB-021's for some Northroads with brown faux leather tape and maybe a honey brooks saddle when I build up my next bike.
P.S I think that fork really ties the bike together. The straight, rounded fork just does the frames style so much sweeter then the rounded carbon stuff...
i bought the volos for the same reason i bought the bike...high-value. very nice wheels at a very fair (used) price. i like the all silver vs the black w/machined sidewalls, but i got them used and had they been the other color i'd still have grabbed them up. they are clinchers (tubies were also available), and i'm told that cane creek used velocity aeroheads. they sure look like 'em. cx-ray spokes even. stiff / fast / reasonably light.
you may also be surprised to learn that the fork was chosen for price/performance as well...i was actually looking for an ouzo pro with the right specs and stumbled across this one. cosmetically it was a bit rough, but i have done some basic composite work in the past so i was comfortable with a clearcoat/logo removal and refinish. it came out so well that the dull crown really stuck out and i had to break out the buffer and polish that too.
i use the bike as a road trainer and it was hardly intended as a fashion plate, but i do recognize that it came out well...so i continue to do what i can to fine tune. 53cm = 17.5lbs as ridden (cages, computer).
want bling? get the volos, not the woundup. there is a later version of this wheelset that uses this flange design in the front as well...alas, mine do not.

(i've got to retake this w/phil cog!)

avner,
my Sputnik will probably be looking like yours down the road abit. Just want to get used to riding it it for now. 1st thing I do will be to reduce the braking by 50%.
I was leaning towards a kilo tt until I saw this bike being available. Readup on all things Sputnik and pulled the trigger.
Good choice dude, I've yet to have a single regret about mine, other then the fact I'm not riding it more. And even with its age i've had absolutely no problems with it.
It's all in the specs. Other then poorer quality steel on the Sputnik and beatnik in 2011. I wish I could find the Geo on a 2007 sputnik.
Well avner, it's your lucky day!
For the 57cm it's:
Center of BB to Top of TT = 22.28/566
EFF TT Length = 22.44/570
Head Tube Angle = 73.5°
Seat Tube Angle = 73°
Chianstay = 15.94/405
Wheelbase = 40.43/1027
Fork Rake = 1.57/40
BB Height = 10.83/275
Headtube = 5.59/142
Standover = 32.28/820
Edit: also no brakes but 16.75 lbs! (though it's pretty ******** they put a flip-flop hub on a brakeless bike) And it was geared 48:15.
Edit2: jesus tapdancing christ they censor r-tard-ed on bf...
It's a fixed/fixed hub. Which is totally dope. yeah, it is hella light too :p

Awesome!
I just realized it's the same hub on mine. It can do fixed/fixed, fixed/free or free/free.
If it weren't for winter I'd rip off my rear brake, though I might still get rid of the freewheel...

I heard about their amazing prices, but also Phil's questionable mechanic work. What was your experience like? Would've loved to pickup a Sputnik, but they're out of 53's. Maybe you got the last one!

I arrived knowing which bike I wanted to ride. Rode it and the fit seemed right.
Paid and put it on the roof rack. The whole adventure took just 20 minutes. I put a busload of faith in these boards.
He has a low key, low overhead shop which was fine with me for buying a ssfg.
Did a 12 mile ride today and everything seems to be perfect.
I saw some of the '11 Sputniks in the shop today and have to say, i'm definitely not a fan of the new bars they're putting on them. They just don't seem comfortable at all.

hey!... I have a sputnik also... and see that your sputnik has Sram Omnium cranks! I am looking at the same cranks for mine also... Been doing a lot of research and can't find anything on the chainline it creates... can you let me know?... I have the 2009 sputnik, I think it is the same as yours... how did it fit?.. did you need to change the chainline? I have a regular 16T cog at the rear wheel that is 42mm chainline... but the Omnium's outboard bearings got me worried that the chainline it makes when installed is like a 45mm or something. I don't want to redish my wheels to fix the issue... I have stock everything except for seats, handlebars and stem... please email me at jlchan1127@yahoo.com... plz thank you.

that's really light, i've always like Jamis - my first road bike was a Jamis Ventura.
reynold 631 - isn't that the same steel as the old Quest? always had my eye on a Quest.
