I need a run belt for my next tri. This seems like something that should be easily made rather than having to buy one. Suggestions for home-made race belt?

first of all, they are only about $5 in a store, so it's not like you will be saving much anyway.
But assuming you're like me, and just like building stuff to say that you made it yourself,
then the ones they sell in the store are made from an elastic cloth band, a quick release to get it on, and some kind of adjustment (though this can be skipped if you are making it for you and don't plan on changing your weight.) I would just use safety pins to attach the number, but you could use snap buttons or a modified drawstring type thing (see fuelbelt race belts).
If you want to go as bare minimum as possible, then get a small cord or rope, put two safety pins on it, and tie it on you in T2, this won't be as comfortable as the above options, but it will get the job done.

seriously? you will maybe save $4/$5 and how MUCH TIME for something that will not be as comfortable to wear around your waist during an endurance race when you need comfort/functionality at a premium.
