Cyclocross - How many do yu have? (Gears)

I'm just curious as to how many gears everyone else's drietrains have. I'm currently running 14 and thinking about going down to a 9 speed. I just feel like i have a bunch of useless gears that i never uses. Anyhow, post what your running

1x7....stripped off the 2 bigger chain rings...all the gears i need (at least until my muscles strengthen into needing the modern 9!)...plus plenty of clearing should i dare hop barriers

So the concencus seems to be that there's no real need for multiple chainrings

I'm using my as a commuter and could only find a 42 on the used. Haven't bothered to change it.

8 x 2, 38/43 up front and 12-26 or 12-25 in the back, I pretty much keep the 43 on for riding to the park for practice rides!

I'm running a ten speed double this year, 12x27 cassette. It's what my bike came with so it's what I ride. Before that I would run a 1x8 or 9. I like that a lot better actually but just don't feel like fussing with the bike. In a race 99% of the time I'm in the small ring which is a 38. Ten speed IMO is basically useless, most of the extra cogs serve the purpose of moving the chain over to the cog you want. I think I would do just fine on a 1x5.

Also running a 2x10 this year. My local conditions are not that muddy so the 46 gets used at most races. If I was in muddier races I would probably do a single ring set up.

39 and 42 up front 12:27 in the rear. can't shift the front, need to choose which one to start with before the race. typically in the 39 even on the dry days.

1x9 with a 39T front ring and 12-26 cassette. Great gearing for my local races, as well as commuting and trail riding.

1x9, 42 up front 12-27 cassette, works pretty well for racing, don't really get into the 3 highest gears much.

42 & 26 chainrings up front (using the middle and inner positions of a road triple crank, outer position is a Salsa chain guard), 11-28 10-speed cassette out back.

I use the entire range during almost every commute. There's a long section of 5% downhill on my way to work, where I spin the 42-11 very fast (in sections any steeper than that, then I'm happy to not pedal), then coming home there are two short sections of 12% gradient, where I'm in either of the two lowest gears depending on how energetic I'm feeling.

one, but i have not ridden it yet...

its my first cross bike but i am waiting on a conversion kit for my headset and a new bottom bracket. the plan is to run 42x18 and i have a fixed 16 on the other side. (for fun an maybe an occasional race)

i also have a spare 9spd campagnolo RD and wheelset that i may team up with an orphaned shimano front friction bar end shifter if i ever feel the need to ride geared. (1x9)

you need to either have a chain guard on the outside and a watcher on the inside or run a paul's chain keeper, which is what I do. Also you need to remove links so when in the largest cog you derailler arm is going forward almost to the limit of the derailler.
