I've been struggling with RLS for a few years and since I've been riding I need every ounce of sleep. I've actually tried Mirapex with good success, but it gives me really weird dreams and besides, I've no idea what's in there! I am worried that this medicine might not be letting my legs recover. No idea.
I ran out of my trail of Mirapex and just happened to have some Wasabi peas. That night no RLS! Strange, the next night had more... no RLS!
So I tried some wasabi by itself and the same thing... no RLS, for a week!!!
I'm no doctor and it might just be me. But give it a try. I only wish it were in pill form, cause as you know wasabi is kick-in-the-butt!
I find Canada Dry Tonic Water works for me. My father's doctor put him on it and says it is the quinine in it that is the active ingredient.

Interesting!
The wasabi is interesting. I eat a lot of sushi and will have to pay attention next time I eat it & how it effects my RLS.

I'm going to test out horseradish today+3... cheaper and easier to come by. ;)
My wife noticed that I wasn't shaking my legs before bed. I was like hey, cool!!! For me, it starts around 10-11pm-ish.
I had wasabi for lunch but caught my RLS at a meeting around 3pm - how long did it take to kick in?

And if you read the ingredients on any "Wasabi" product in the supermarket, you will find only 10% actually contain any wasabi.

Yeah - you could try out something like this as a convenient and healthy option:

Good luck with it!

Now you're talkin'!!! I like wasabi, but eating wasabi every night is getting to be a drag. But I had another non-RLS night! Wahoooo.
I haven't tried horseradish... I thought I had some, but didn't.
Oh and I found these Wasabi Capsules: http://hcbl.com/Products/355/Wasabi-Softgels/Details.html
I really hope this works for those of you reading this thread.

do you guys really have RLS or just sore legs from biking?
i sometimes find the urge to keep "stretching" my legs by straightening them in bed, but i don't consider that RLS...just sore legs.
My RLS is an uncontrollable - almost vibration-like - sensation under under kneecaps. My legs don't twitch and they aren't sore. But the desire or need to move them is overwhelming.
From WikiPedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restless_legs_syndrome):
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) or Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome is characterized by an irresistible urge to move one's body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. It most commonly affects the legs, but can affect the arms, torso, and even phantom limbs. Moving the affected body part modulates the sensations, providing temporary relief.
RLS causes a sensation most closely compared to a burning, itching, or tickling in the muscles.

It was that night. It might have taken a night or so before I realized something was different. It doesn't seem to matter when I eat it, but it's always been after lunch.
Dang, I was hoping this helped others.
I'm trying horseradish tonight.

I had it a few years before I started biking. I've really only biked since last year.
It's a pretty weird feeling. For me it's like bugs are crawling up the inside of my legs. Moving them only helps. But it only helps until I stop. Then I have 15 seconds before it starts up. The only thing that helped was getting up and doing push-ups and leg exercises. Good thing is... I can do lots of push-ups. ;) It would get my heart rate up, which gives me a few minutes to get back to sleep. But since I've been riding, my heart rate drops back down fast.
Oh and the moving of the legs continues even when I'm asleep. So says the wife.

I am giving this a shot - both Wasabi peas and Tonic Water. I've had untreated RLS my whole life and it drives my wife crazy.
thanks for the tip!

Second night using horseradish. I guess this might be a 1-10 solution (1=Best 10=Worst) .
Mirapex = 1 (Side effects: really weird dreams)
Wasabi = 3 (Side effects: None)
Horseradish = 5 (Side effects: None)
When I get the wasabi pills delivered, I'll report back.

Interesting. RLS sucks.
Is this real wasabi or American "wasabi", which is made from horseradish and mustard? My guess is it'd be the latter.
But real wasabi is a plant similar to horseradish so presumeably the same active compounds would be present.

I agree, it might not be the best... but for me it works. It's been almost 2 weeks with relatively no RSL. Now to keep the dog and cat from gettin' me up!
I have wasabi pills showing up in a few days... I hope they work the same. Wasabi is tasty and all... but sheeseh! ;)

Ibuprofen.
I've tried ibuprofen, tylenol, baby Bufferin, iron, potassium, magnesium and anything else I can find. For me nothing worked (except Mirapex).

Be very careful about Quinine.. I had HALF of a vodka+tonic one night, and half way through the night HAD to go home.. I was hot/sweating, ITCHY ALL OVER, and generally felt lightheaded.. My DD said I knocked out several times on the ride home and was talking incoherently until I threw up. Then I was ok- just hot and itchy.
Research next morning led me to read about Quinine.. some people are HIGHLY allergic because if I remember right it has some kind of mild poison in it, or it IS a mild poison.. I don't know, read the Wikipedia page about it, it was pretty informative.
edit: I also had some other alcohol that night (not much) but nothing out of the ordinary. the only out of the ordinary was the vodka+tonic. I also wasn't drunk to clarify.. I was maybe 3 drinks deep at most.

I thought "RLS" sounded pretty bogus, but it can keep me from falling asleep. I've tried ibuprofen and found it didn't seem to help much. My GP prescribed 2 Pramipexole .125 mg tablets at bedtime. He said it's a really safe drug. I only take it when my legs have started to twitch, which generally is only in the summer. I haven't noticed any side effects, but, after the above posts, I will have to see if I've taken it on nights where my dreams are spectacular. If so, I might take it just for the dreams!
Calcium supplements work for me.

I'm gonna have to tell her about this!

It got to the point that the wasabi wasn't making much of a difference. I've stopped for several months. But now my RLS is back to full. I guess its time to try it again.
