Winter Cycling - Anyone have experience retrofitting some pit zips?

I have a number of shirts and jackets that I want to add pit zips to. These are items which are perfect as a single layer down to the low 40s but which start to cook me when I change tempos or head inside.

I'm thinking a sewing machine and some zippers. And scissors, of course.

Anyone done it?

If you get this figured out I'd like to hear about it, some of my stuff needs pit zips too.

It can be done. It is easier if there is a seam running down the inside of the arm and sleeve. It gives the tailor more material to work with to stich the seam on each side of the zipper. There is a great tailor down the street from me. She replaced a pit zipper that went bad on one of my jackets. $20 I asked her about adding them to another jacket and she mentioned the seams. She said it can be done without the seam there, but you will see more of the exposed zipper.
