Winter Cycling - shoes that equate to specialized rockhopper shoes?

i have a pair of rockhopper shoes that are on their last legs. i'd buy another pair except that they're not produced anymore.

i'm looking for something equivalent in warmth and durability (25-50 F). any suggestions?

There's a half dozen winter shoes on the market now. Lake, Sidi, Shimano, and Specialized all make one. Many make two (a warmer one and a less warm one). I'm guessing you want one of the less warm ones.

Sidi even sells a battery headed insole for their shoes.


I think most of them would be pretty warm at 50. And most of them would be good at 25. For 40-50 I usually use a heavy wool sock, shoe cover, and normal shoe.

perhaps the cycling world considers shoes without mesh venting to be winter shoes.

Pretty much. The trouble is, IMO, that you lose lots of head to your cleat. So you need a winter shoe.

If this isn't the case then the cycling world thinks you need shoe covers (and yes I understand why this is annoying -- I really understand). Maybe you should stitch some neoprene over the vents on a pair of shoes?
