Alt Bike Culture - banana seat

Has any one ever put a banana seat on your mtn. bike to create a pedal forward design? Is it practical for a cruiser.

This isn't a very good picture but the yellow bike in this picture started it's life as a mountian bike. Does not really fit the category of practical but there are endless possiblities if you have a retired mountian bike you want to give a new life to. If I were looking to build a cruiser I would probably go with something other than a banana seat, they are really not that comfortable. If you want something that will turn heads and look good for short rides it can be done. The problem is usually the sissy bar is not long enough to give the seat any height but a homemade sissy bar or some kind of extensions are not too difficult. Depends on what you plan on using it for what direction to go.

I am riding with a disease called lymphedema (abnormal swelling of the body). Pedaling seems to drain the fluid from my body better than anything I have tried. My legs aren't the greatest because of said disease and looking to make a cheap form of a crank forward pedal. I'm doing this for health reasons. The RANS crank-forward bikes start at around $1K, but (-if you weren't aware-) RANS sells framesets for their crank-forward bikes. Getting the best crank-forward is not as expensive as it sounds. You can ask on the http://www.crankforward.com/ for prices and potential problems.

The frameset includes all the "special" parts, then you'd just go get a $50 MTB or hybrid off craigslist, three chains and then swap the parts over.

It was the best crank forward design that was designed for a lot of riding that I had seen. I've never looked at the stuff from the previous poster. Electra cruisers are designed to be crank forward as well, but they aren't setup for lots of riding.

It's very practical for a cruiser. If you want to convert a 26" wheeled cruiser to be set up like a large Sting-Ray, it's easy and inexpensive if you shop around a bit.

The parts are readily available on the lowrider bike scene. You can even get sissy bars with suspension in them.
