SEALs Bike America Team's Journey Across America Heads Toward the Finish Line

Forty-two days and 3,300 miles later, the SEALs Bike America Team will cross the finish line on Saturday to conclude its epic cross-country journey across America.

The team of five has pedaled its way through eight states -- all the way from Coronado, Calif., where Navy SEALs begin their training, to Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Riding with a purpose, the group hopes to raise over $100,000 for the Naval Special Warfare Foundation -- an organization that provides tragedy assistance and family support for the Naval Special Warfare community.

Despite grueling 90-mile-a-day rides, these patriots say they have been happy to pedal across the country for this cause, because it’s for their fellow SEALs and families who have devoted their lives to serving the country.

I rode with the USAF team for a few years. We rode as a recruiting mission, but all our own individual expenses, except leave were our own personal responsibility. The SAG vehicles came out of the Recruiting budget. These guys may have been under similar funding.

These guys may have been under similar funding.Back in the 70's when I was in the Army, my company sent a walking/long-distance-marching team to particpate in the 4-day 100 mile Nimegen event in the Netherlands. Great fun but the financing was sorta like your deal - we covered a fair bit of the expenses ourselves. We did wangle no-cost TDY orders for the travel but were supported equipment and 1-support-vehicle-wise. 2 other units from the same Division also participated and that vehicle supported us all. I think there were 12 USAREUR/USAFE units at Nimegen that year. Great training and PR for low cost.

OTOH, the SEALs are a special mission group. While I was in Europe, one SEAL team was doing some Alpine climbing as part of their winter ops training. Some "s***" went down elsewhere, that team was "retrieved" from their climb and sent off to do their real world thing tout de suit(sp?). All their climbing and winter training expenses were covered --- including the retrieval off the mountain by Swiss Army helo's.

Point is, SEALs and other spec ops troops, tend to play by different financial rules. Look at the air show demonstrations and "training & familiarization flights" the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels do for celebrities and dignitaries for a similar perspective.

I bet you have some interesting stories from the USAF cycling team days though.
