Classic & Vintage - $1017.00 for a '82 Trek 720 on E-bay

What the hell, could some explain this to me.

Someone really wanted it really badly but missed their chance on CL?

It's sure not a bad bike to have - though with sidepulls, it is less in demand than the 84 version.

Typical ebay variation. Next one will probably go for 1/2 that amount.

They were hitting $700 or $800 about 3 years ago. I'm not surprised one hit $1000+, considering how much people idolize these pieces of flaming $hit. Yes, you heard me right.

I owned the exact same frame (an '82 720/728 - the only year they came without canti posts), bought it for $50 not more than 5 blocks from home. I've never ridden a deader 531 frame; those huge chainstays would suck the life out of every single pedal stroke.

What's more, the brake bridge split from the chainstay for lack of silver. I sold the blasted thing for $150, because I couldn't justify asking one penny more for the wretched thing. I later found out that the seatstays split from the seatlug 2 years after I sold it.

A $1,000 pile of low-grade bike snobbery, that's what it is. At least my half-Japanese Trek 610 was reasonably fun, despite its own issues.

- The $1000 price is ridiculous of course, and I have no reason to doubt what you say about the extra long stays.

I can add though, that I have an '82 Model 614 and a 600 at the moment - both '531 Trek touring bikes, but with somewhat shorter stays, and I wouldn't describe their ride as dead at all. They are both quite decent. ( I guess that's the diference a couple centimeters can make. )

At that price I would expect it to be NOS.

Trek had Reynolds seatstays and chain stays shipped from England to Japan, where they were assembled into the rear triangle assemblies and then shipped to Waterloo to be attached to the main frame.

Imported forks, sure, they are complete in their own right, but rear triangles... wow. I'd love to see a box full of those.

That's more than I paid for mine (new) in '82.

I am more of a spinner than masher, those long stays really soak up the bumps, and the long wheelbase gives it excellent stability. I wish they were designed for 700C instead of 27" wheels, though.

That means my 620 should go for $917, right? I'm rich!

If purchased as a complete bike, it came with 700c wheels. I believe 1982 was the only year without cantilever brakes, there's no reason you can't change the wheels.

Interesting with the blue hoods. I gotta ask, do you really ride the seat at that angle?

I'll say. I bought basically an identical bike, with a mish-mash of Campy groups (Super Record, Gran Sport, Record, Triomphe, Victory, and the same Modolo brakes) for under 300$ on the bay this past Feb. The paint on them falls off it you look at it, though. I'm treating mine with extra care.

As to the Trek, it's ballpark for one with cantis, but I'm surprised one w/o would go that high. Confusion on part of the buyer, maybe, a bit of market anamoly. I've found the ride on them to be very stable, but they're not the greatest at cornering. Not surprising, considering they are a touring bike. Alas, mine was 75$ at a thrift store, so that gives no one any actual info about actual market prices. It also has not self-destructed like Kurt's did, although considering the shape it was in when I found it that is rather surprising.

Can't honestly remember whether I've adjusted it since taking that photo. I don't usually think about how the saddle looks until I see the bike in a picture... and it sure looks awful, doesn't it? Just rode it up to Princeton for a meeting last week... very comfortable.

At $600 I think that was a great deal. Half the components were Bianchi panto stuff and all were in great shape. Parts value alone was probably close to $900. I had a bid in with my sniping service but "unknown error" kept it from being placed.
