Classic & Vintage - The biggest frame I've ever seen

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

72 cms c-t .... double toptube, double seatstays!

Rack is welded (brazed I suppose) to the frame.

I believe that was Yao Ming's bike. A friend of mine has a older Raleigh that the headtube me be at least a foot long. Tallest frame I've ever seen. We all laugh at it when were at his shop for club get togethers. He doesn't ride it but he sells vintage bikes in his skateshop.

That's big, alright. I've never seen double seat stays like that. The lower top tube would be inches too tall for me.

Very nicely done. Also the only time I can see how you'd want stem shifters over DT shifters, heh. I guess barcons would be the alternative.

Note the totally awesome Grateful Dead headbadge. I'd LOVE something like that on one of my bikes.
You don't need to lock that bike...who'd be dumb enough to try to steal it? The owner would crush you.

Some years ago I remember seeing a picture of a Cannondale bike that was made for Shaquille O'Neal. Pretty large monster size frameset.

I have a 27-inch (68.5cm) Univega Viva Sport frame in the barn. I cannot even get on it to ride it.
I saw a Mike Melton custom 29" frame years ago, built "marathon" style. Impressive in the shop; more impressive going down the road under its owner.

There are some Arvon frames out there in the 70cm plus range... as a specialty builder he gets a lot of build requests for bikes like this.
Will have to get some pictures for y'all.

Shrinkboy,
You really know someone 2.5 meters tall? That's over 8 feet. Can't be more than a few of those fellas on the planet. I've known a couple of seven footers and they were huge. Couldn't imagine another foot tacked on.

Interesting design. Judging by the lines in the garage door it appears the the top tube is higher where it joins the seat tube vs. the head tube. This is a sloping top tube going the other way.

And 100 years ago they were the shortest in the developed world. No one is quite sure how they got so tall so fast.

I tend to think it has to do with the milk Dutch farmers produce and which we are fed as a child. Those dutch cows have an unbelievable annual milk production, partly due to selective breeding, but I guess there's something going on there akin to doping in bike racing. In other words: hormones!

The pictures here are of 'de reus van Rotterdam' (the giant of Rotterdam), Rigardus Rijnhout. He lived from 1922 to 1959 and was 2.37 m tall, his weight was 230 kgs, his shoesize 62. His abnormal length was the result of a tumor in the hypophysis, of which he eventually died.

That's more like it, certainly a tall family.
You'd think their country might be better at basketball.
One of my college friends license plate on his Civic was 6FOOT10. He took the driver's seat out and drove from the rear.

We're good at football! And we gave you Rik Smits for basketball ... (7.4 tall, Indiana Pacers)
My Bridgestone 400, 69cm. I had 2 that were almost identical and sold this one. One can not have enough "big" BIKES.

I know there are some tall dudes on this forum, but a family friend (one of my son's former teachers) is something like 6'10" and a bike lover. The problem he has, and I think this is common for larger folk, is that the bikes simply wear out. He has had tubing break, lugs give out at the BB, etc. So he tries to keep a solid rotation of bikes going. And he has a new 42 hole wheelset as they were constantly breaking spokes, etc.
I pass him leads when I can but they are few and far between. He regrets not moving more quickly on a large (71cm) lead I sent him, as it sold before he could get to it.
So please pass on any viable leads if it's not a bike you intend to keep. Thanks!

That is a really cool bike. I'm 6' tall, so I wouldn't be able to ride it as one normally would. If it were mine I would put on some swept-back bars and a rack and sit on the rack to ride it.

Some Dutch people, a Canadian, and a French gal at the Ford HPV Challenge a couple summers back. You get one guess about which is which:

If I was super tall then that's how I would want my custom to be made.
I wonder how long the cranks are. Looks like the BB is set a bit higher than normal.

Many, many moons ago I saw Kareem Abdul-Jabbar riding along San Vincente Blvd in the Brentwood are of LA. He looked like he was riding a 24" frame that had 16" wheels on it, kinda like some of the stuff posted above. Didn't see who made the frame, though, as I was too far away.

71 Vette?
I have a ~64cm Raleigh that is on the verge of looking ridiculous, but geez, that Colian is diving into the crazypool with both feet.
You know those setups for tandems that raise the cranks high enough for small children to use? Put one of those on the Colian, and it'd be a single-frame tallbike.

I think it's in Freakonomics where it's suggested that the health of children in Holland has a lot to do with the height of Dutch folks, too. Supposedly it's the only country on earth where a child born into the lowest economic bracket and another born into the highest would be statistically indistinguishable to a doctor treating them. So the authors suggest that all that great healthcare and help for poor children in terms of diet, etc, is what drives the boom in height. Everyone is healthy and strong, so everyone's taller?
I may be remembering that wrong, but I think I've got it. Maybe someone else has a copy of the book handy or can explain it better, but I remember it making a great deal of sense, whereas my explanation isn't as clear as I'd like.

This is a very unusual 35in Schwinn Varsity Bike. It is an older bike but really cool. The man that owned this bike was 6'7'' tall. If you are a tall man and loves a classic Schwinn bike, this may be just what you are looking for. Give us a call at 253-564-5112.

Cloese.... a '70. The dead give away is the bronze paint.
I'm not the tallest around at 6 foot 5, but I am on the hunt for a large frame bike. My mtb is a 23 incher, and it dwarfs everything I've come across.
