Cyclocross - 29er wheels on a cross bike?

I believe 29er wheels are the same diameter as 700c. Has anyone here ever put 29er wheels on their cross bike?

I'm curious as to thoughts about this. I know the frame geometry is different, but I'm still curious if anyone has ever used this setup and if so, in what situations.

Most 29ers have 135mm rear spacing and disc brakes, meaning the wheels won't fit under a cross bike and probably don't even have braking surfaces on the rims.

I've used 29er wheels on 700c bikes, and vice versa many times. Just need to adjust the axle spacing as necessary, which is not a big deal. Obviously, don't try using disc only wheels with canti brakes but that kind of goes without saying. I wouldn't say 29er wheels would be ideal for cx as they tend to be beefier, i.e. heavier and more built than we require but, to answer the question yes it works.

Good info so far, just wanted to add that some steel cross frames have 132.5 rear spacing so you can used 135 mtb hubs or 130 road hubs. These frames would work easily with 29er wheels. Road wheels are plenty strong in my experience, for both cx racing and trail riding.

The Voodoo Agwe and now the Nakisi... let you run both 700C and 29er wheels.

The Agwe is more upright and the Nakisi has drop bars. Oh and they come with cantis if CX is your thing.

You swap axles and remove 2.5mm of spacers from both sides.

and there will be no clearance for the chain, if there were.

you re center the rim over the axle, as taking out the 5mm spacer from the left,
throws it off..

Wheel truing.. Re-Tension spokes. add dish.

I've done it with just spacers. If I remember correctly (and it has been a while) there were several washers between the locknuts. Mine didn't require any redishing but I could see how that would be needed with other hubs.

29er=700C. Same-same. I'm pretty sure ALL 'cross bikes come with 29er wheels. Are you talking about TIRES?

We are talking about axle spacing. Road is 130mm while MTB is 135mm. Most 29er wheels are 135mm, thus the issue.
