The seat clamp was tightened to the point of cutting into the seat post....or were there cuts already in the post to keep the seat from revolving?

My new Trek came with one of those. I replaced it. I can totally understand how that happened. Definitely a gorilla.

Aluminum post, steel clamp. You don't need to be a gorilla to leave marks like that.
