My Soma Double Cross DC accepts both disc & rim brakes, It also accepts both 130mm and 135mm spacing. The rear drop-outs are 132.5mm and the frame is steel.

Currently the bike has 130mm Shimano 105 road hubs and canti brakes.

I want to build a new wheel set that has 135 spacing and will later accept a disc brake. For now, I'll continue to use the canti brakes. The rims will have machined sidwalls for rim brakes.

What 135mm disc brake hub for my CX bike? I would like to keep the cost of the hub moderate, in the $100 to $150 range.

you really only have shimano hubs to look at. also take a look at the new sram hubs. there is also the cheaper formula or joytech stuff.

shimano XT, SLX or deore are all good.

you got a couple bikes for the race? old wisdom was the wider the gap between cogs ,
the less it would pack up with mud to the extent of not shifting.. or moving..

then the factorys had 9 and 10 speed stuff to sell so that is what they put under the racers, they paid.

2 bikes seems to be the minimum to actually finish , in foul weather ..
the spare bike cleaner an important team member.

I may CX race in the future for fun, but for now the bike is used for long distance rides, mostly hilly century rides and 200k events.

It will see some un-paved road and easier single track. Some commuting, too.

I need a new wheel set and have decided that the upgrade to disc brakes needs to start with this new addition.

Depending on how fancy you're gonna get with the number of pawls and teeth the hubs can get expensive... the very least it should have double-seals. This means no deore or deore 4xx... you can get a hope hub for that price... they're ok i've heard but the freewheel is really loud.
