Classic & Vintage - 1970's PINARELLO TREVISO PISTA?

Hi everyone,

I recently aquired this frameset from a friend and was hoping someone here would help me confirm the manufacturer. The down tube seat tube and head tube decals seem to be original, however the Campione Olimpico '84 Campione del Mondo '90 decal I'm pretty sure is not since the frame is surely older than that. The serial number on the bottom bracket shell (B1878176) and on the fork tube (176) leads me to believe this frameset is from 1976.

The track ends are not marked, but the fork ends are Campagnolo. The bottom bracket shell threading is Italian. Size is 56 x 56 center to center. There is no clearcoat over the decals, but that wasn't common on old Italian frames, right? Frame doesn't appear to have been repainted. Oh, and the seat cluster lug is threaded on the left side, so only needs a normal M6 bolt.

Also, if this is a Pinarello, would these have been the original decals? Would it not have had a Columbus decal somewhere? Here are the pictures:

Not a Pinarello. The Amatore and Bassano were Pinarello's track offerings in the late '80s (I realize the seat tube sticker - which belongs on the downtube - is from 1991+, but it's recent enough):

At any rate, a Pinarello wouldn't have longitudinal BB cutouts, and the fork crown would be pantographed/engraved - not to mention Pinarello lug cutouts.

Is the rear spacing 120mm? It might be a road bike with track ends welded on, definitely the BB is atypical of a track frame. The workmanship looks pretty mediocre to my eye, nothing special. I'd say that it is a re-paint as well.

I doubt it. Even if this frame had clamp-on hardware everywhere, the BB sits pretty high - about where I'd expect on a track frame. Likewise, the fork looks equally generic as the frame.

My 1987 Montello has a single longitudinal cutout at the bottom of the BB shell.
I agree that this probably is not a Pinarello due to the lack of markings both on the seatstay lugs and fork but also the bottom bracket of mine clearly is engraved PINARELLO next to the cutout.

Couldn't it be an older model? The frames pictured in the catalog are from the 80's. Could Pinarellos from the 70's maybe not have had the lug cutouts? I know Pinarello dates from 1952, but there aren't very many older models to be found online. In any case, I like the frameset, I just don't like not knowing what it is. Could anyone here give me some clue as to what it might be, if not a Pinarello?

Hello all. Finally discovered the make of this frameset. This is an Austrian RIH Super - not to be confused with Dutch RIH Sport - from 1976. Looks like the most distinctive feature of these track frames is the shape of the ends. I have only seen three other track frames of this make. The frame does not appear to have been made by a custom framebuilder, looks more like a factory model. The fork crown is a pretty generic track crown, blades are round. Lugs are pretty but simple, and the bb shell has the two cutouts at the bottom plus a window cutout front and back (where downtube and chainstays meet the bb).

I'm very happy with this bike, the geometry is very tight and sharp. The wheelbase is at about 97 cm right now, and I believe the angles are 75 degrees. Fork rake is about 2.5 cm. Here are a few pics.

I will be repainting the frame soon, and hopefully will be able to leave it as close to the original as possible. Hope this helps any RIH Super owners out there.

Not a Pinarello, but it wants to be one. Stay terminations are all different. Maybe a Cosette? he writes half jokingly.

Thanks! It took me a while to find out what it was, thankfully an eBayer who was selling a frameset like it helped me confirm the make by comparing serial numbers (they were identical except for the last three digits).
