mating a SRAM i-motion 3-speed with anything other than an ugly grip shifter

im building up a Velo Orange Mixte for my GF for Xmas

I love the SRAM i-motion 3 speed coaster that came on my SWOBO Otis.... the shift cable emerges from the wheel side of the chainstay, lacking that annoying little doohickey that hangs outside the hub, like shimano and newer SA hubs have (seems like it could shear right off with a wayward step)..

but alas the Ugly grip shifter, at odds with any true classic build-up.

i remember reading somewhere that Sheldon Brown stated that 3-speed hubs could be mated with friction shifters..true? how about the classic SA trigger shifters? would a SA/SRAM mashup wreck havoc on the internals? or would it have to be specifically indexed?

hmm..

thanks in advance

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I want to ditch the grip shift on my Otis as well.
