That is badass. The section where they are crossing the river and chucking their bike as far as they can made me laugh out loud. I would love to see someone do that with a modern bike then drag it out of the river and ride away.

the best commentary for me was, as someone mentioned in the road forum where I saw this, was teh old feller saying of that river crossing, "this wasnt the real place for the river crossing, someone had moved the flags over.....namely me, as I wasnt racing that weekend"--hilarious, he buggered it all up for them as a smartass prank, priceless, just priceless.

as he said, a good part of this race was running. As you say 4 rings, serious hardass course. Top guys would have been in bloody good shape.

is the guy at 0:28 riding fixed gear? i dont think i saw a rear brake...

Based on the bikes, I would have guessed it was newer, but I think, in the interviews, they reference dates in the late 50s.

Personally, this is how I wish 'cross was today. Modern courses are pretty tame.

im building my first cross bike. its older bianchi frame what will be using a white industries eccentric hub. i will definitely give fixed cross a try, but will probably use the freewheel side off road most of the time.

I noticed that also, for fun I took my ss/fg to one of the local cross courses on an off day. Did 5 laps single and 5 laps fixed. I found fixed gave pretty good feedback in the mud was worried about pedal strike in the turns but never had an issue with it. Though mounting and dismounting were tricky at best. Maybe there is some trick I don't know about.
