Bicycle Mechanics - install shimano sti shifters?

i have my new ultegra 6703 shifters, and i want to install them.

i have removed my bar tape, and now i need to remove my old 105 shifter.

i have read that i am supposed to use a 5mm allen wrench on the outside of the shifter - both to remove the 105, and to install the ultegra.

i have spent a while looking, but i don't see anywhere that the 5mm allen wrench can go..., either to loosen the 105, or to tighten the ultegra.

help...

update - i found how to remove the 105 shifter,

but i still can't find the 5mm hole on the ultegra 6703 shifter.

Did you pull back the rubber hood? its on the side under the rubber.

for 105 look for a groove on the outside, slide the allen in and match to groove. you can pull the rubber back a little for a better look. ultegra, roll the hoods back

Make sure you use the shimano dura ace cable set or better (yokozuna etc) with the 6700 systems. You need a mininumum of 3 metal ferrules for ultegra, preferably all metal. Do not use the standard 7800 cableset, it will provide supbar shifting for a short amount of time and then it'll get worse.

what are the ferules you are talking about?

Please don't be offended if this sounds like a patronizing question but, have you read the instruction and installation sheet that came with the STI brifter set? It's really amazing what you can learn by reading the information the manufacturer provides.

I can't imagine that the cables and housing set that came with the brifters wouldn't work just fine.

the ultegra 6700 shifters are installed, and working pretty well, needing only a fine tune at this point.

Typically, the ferrules are preinstalled on Shimano cable housing and need only be reinstalled if the housing is cut shorter.

so they are the little end caps for the housing...,

the ultegra shifters came with metal end caps.

does anyone else think the stock cables and housing are not adequate? i'll replace them if there is some
consensus that the stock ones aren't good enough.
