Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have a beater bike that has a striped thread. I want to install a helicoil and have a friend that has the tools but does not have any helicoils left. Is there a place I can get a pack of 5 or 6 or a single insert? Its on the chain ring side RHT if that helps.

Most auto parts stores have them as do many hardware stores. Roger

Yes but the problem is the size. The bike pedals uses a 9/16-20 which seems to only be used on bikes. The best I've found is a pack of 50 thats costs about $65. I could get a cheap crank set for that price.

The 9/16" x 20 thread is a common spark plug thread, so the right hand version should be available at any decent auto parts supply, probably in packs of 10. Many years ago, I contracted with an insert maker to wind the left hand version (which they were willing since they already made the RH version as a stock item) so I could sell crank repair coils for both sides. I sold many over the years, and you should be able to find a LH coil at the bike shop.

I thought all spark plugs these days are metric therads. I did a quick search of on-line auto parts and all the helicoils were meteric except a couple had 7/8-18. Do you know (or anyone for that matter) of a metric size that would be compatable to the 9/16-20? meteric seem to be easier to get.

For aluminum rank arm repairs there are doubly threaded sleeves
inside and out.
that include a tap to cut the new larger
threads so thread in the sleeve.. not specifically helicoil (tm)

Sorry Bob but even standard thread inserts don't seem to come in 9/16-20. two questions.

1. What bonehead came up with that size for pedals?

and

2. Why did everyone follow him?

Hmmm, just because you can't find something, does not mean it doesn't exist. Try this:

Bike Tools Etc - 9/16''x20 RH PEDAL RECOIL INSERT, Each $1.50 (http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cgi?id=785775910124&d=single&c=Shop-Aids&sc=Thread-Repair&tc=Thread-Inserts&item_id=BI-916RB)

I believe it was one of the Wright brothers that came up with that threading.
