Bicycle Mechanics - Bottom Bracket

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Quick bottom bracket question: I have an older Specialized Rockhopper Comp. I'm trying to replace the worn bottom bracket. The one I have now is 122.5 x 68. When I went to my LBS (and a couple of other bike shops, too) they tried to sell me a 118 x 68 and said it would work. I'm thinking the shorter BB is going to bring my small chainring too close to my chain stay and throw my chain out of alignment. Certainly the manufacturer put a 122 on there for a reason. I'm not a bike mechanic, but logic tells me to find the original size.

Find one in the original size.
