Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What kind of gearing do you guys use?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What ratios you guys use? I'm thinking about buying a track bike to regain some strength I lost to "spinning" too much.

46x14 or 46x16 mostly. I was running 48X14 for awhile and that was a little tough - not in moving, but in stopping. Funny thing about riding brakeless, you worry about stopping more than starting.
Shouldn't you just stay at 53-11 though? You could even go up from that if you're running true track cogs. Just make sure you have brakes, which would probably mean that you need a converted road bike, not a track bike.
Actually, I don't know of anyone that makes a rear cog that's down to an 11 for a fixie, so you'd probably have to jump up on the front. I think the smallest I've found is the 14, so you'd probably want somewhere around a 54 or 55 up front to get the same gear inches (I'd know for sure, but Sheldon's gear inch calculator isn't working for me right now).
Should I really be feeding this troll?

For you I would recommend 39-28 gearing, 650C 35mm wheels, and 165mm cranks.

60x20, in snow.
ooh . i´ve only won a few races: mess. wc in cargo, best coed team, a 360 km road race with 1500 participants, and i still hold the 24 hour solo mtb in my country.. but i am nowhere near your speed - so stick with what you know - 53*11..
i ride 50*18 trackbike- but recommend 48*18, because its cooler..

I ride a 48/16 and a 48/14- what you need really depends on what you're after. If you are looking to get your "spin" back I'd recomend a 48/18.
How did you lose your strength by spinning if you were riding 53-11 "all the way"? :D
P.S. I read about your affinity for 180 cranks - be prepared to forget about that on a track bike!
Damn! How did this guy find the SS/Fix forum?

look out, now he's in your woodpile...
i actually kinda dig what 53-11 is doing to the roadie forum. he makes a couple of preposterous claims, and the next thing you know there's dozens of ordinarily sane guys having total conniption fits, trying to prove how wrong he is. i think he's playing that forum like a violin.
i ride 50:17, with 165 mm cranks. but i'm a scrawny m*therf*cker.

I run a custom Paragon 62t front with an 11t on the back. It's perfect for anything that isn't flat, hilly, windy or bumpy. I'd prolly prefer a 64:10, but I really enjoy the 2.8" DH slicks I run coz they're so fast! I know I could probably hit 50 on the flats if I ran a 2.5, but the 2.8's are just so nice, ya know?
Paragon
Actually looked those up - whoah! 60T chainring! (Apologies if everyone already knows about these...)

if this is a serious thread, I ride a 52/16 on my SS with 170mm crankarms. Chicago is completely flat so it's not a problem. Riding clipless definitely helps.
ive got an 11 tooth cog im gonna be replacing my 16 t with soon. i started with 42x16 and now it is just so easy.....by the time i build any speed im spinning out of control.

Hey I thought you're too cool to ride fixed. You'll probably have to ride on a 42/18 gear ratio because you got chicken legs.

I like to run a real high cadence so I push a 42 x 18 with 165's, but according to "Ultra-G" that makes me soft.

Hahaha.....I should make riding fixed a stipulation of all trainees entering my Top Gun school of Cycling (makes you strong).
Ultra G, I'm still laughing about the time you gave the road forum an authoritative opinion on what Type of STI shifter lasts longer: Ultegra or Dura Ace?....considering the only time you shift gears is when you shift bikes!!:lol::lol: (langster--->fuji fixed....that's ultra G's gear shift!):lol::lol:
P.S. I'm amazed...it looks like I actually started a legitimate thread this time. LOL.

my bike,
Carrera road bike conversion, looks like a 80's or 90's model, 'cause the decals look kinda old.
52x18 the same gear ratio I've been running since I got my first fixie in Jan 04', a Schwinn something or another.I Like the higher gear ratio 'cause it's built up my legs so much quicker and I think it will make it harder for non-fixed riding thieves to get away fast and safely, especially without brakes....
Earlier this year some schmuck tried to get away with my bike when i left it in front of French Meadow while I was getting some Joe and this guy was having such a hard time getting it up to speed. I ran up beside him and asked if he was having any trouble trying to get away. He just looked at me, sighed, and said, "I give up, you can have this piece of s**t back!" I did not feel like hitting after he said that 'cause I was laughing so hard on the inside, with a sigh of relief as well. go figure.........

38-48/13-25 on my roadie (pin.)
44/16 on my BMX (terrible one)
43/16 on my barbike (monark sportster)
43/18 on my ratbike schwinn
52/16 on my mixtie reserve in illinois (motobecane)
42/16 on the bike i keep at my friend's house in boston. (lotus excelle)
riding fixed on the street is ALL about spinning. you either spin, or you kill your knees.

Oh, I'll add that my mtb is now 40:20 (free) or 40:17 (fixed). Spin, monkey, SPIN!
my fixed gear is a 42x16 and when i ride single speed i ride 52x16. 42 doesn't allow me to go as fast as i would like when fixed so i'm thinking about going up to 48...hopefully that will be my happy middle place.
