Bicycle Mechanics - Replacing broken Dura Ace 7700 shifter to Ultegra 6700 ?

I have to replace the right 7700 shifter.
I am considering going to Ultegra 6700 10 speed.
I would get new Ultegra 6700 shifters ,Ultegra 10 speed casette and Ultegra 10 speed chain.
Will it work by keeping front and back derailleur ( Dura ace 7700) , Ultegra 6500 calipers , truevativ 39/53 crank set.
All existing parts have about 20k+ miles on it from 3 owners.

Should be no compatibility problems.
Have you tied flushing out your 7700 shifters with WD40? That is how I restored my 7700 shifters. Just shoot lots of WD40 directly into the mechanism.

No, only the pre-9-speed D-A rear derailleurs are "strange".

I am upgrading the shifters ,cassette,and chain to 6700 as planed. In addition replacing also the front ring since they are worn quit a bit.
Having a fitting done at the same time,this resulted in a new bar and stem to acomodate the change in design/position of the new shifters.
My only question is now since i am going this far how much sense would a upgrade of the rear derailleur to also 6700 make?

If the old 7700 rear dérailleur is in good shape it should work fine.

IMO, the only reason to swap a functioning 7700 rd with a new 6700 rd is if you like the looks of the 6700 better.

Plus, most people don't understand the model number differences, and only go by the name. So others will see and think "Dura-Ace > Ultegra" even though the Ultegra is 2-ish generations newer. This may come into play if you ever decide to sell your bike.

Of course the rear shifter, chain, and cassette must be of the same "speed".

I will keep the 7700 derailleur. This bike served me well since i bought it used in August last year.
After about 1000miles (incl. my first century) and with a better fit this ride should bring me plenty of "pain" and enjoyment for the next view years.
I should be set with these components and if i were them out that will be a good thing.

The FD actuation ratio has changed a little, starting with DA 7900 and Ultegra 6700 shifters and FDs, so you may need to be pretty precise with your FD adjustments now. The brake actuation ratio has also changed... should be quite useable, but not quite what Shimano would call an "A" level of functionality.

Rear derailleur compatability has not changed between 7800 and 7900 and their respective ultegra/105 groups. You SHOULD match the front derailleur though - for optimum performance, along with the brakes. Neither are show stoppers if you don't give a rats ass.
