Just read this: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local&id=7785164

This is crazy, passed what I thought was blood on the bridge this morning and thought that was strange. Guess is was from this guy. Apparently he lost some teeth and maybe a broken jaw.

"Authorities say the victim was assaulted by the man while biking across the bridge just before 7 a.m."

I sometimes wonder about using the bridges late at night or very early in the morning. I guess if you see someone running naked it's better to turn around take a different route.

That was my thought as well. Naked dude on a bridge in November = watch out. Who knows how this played out though.

The crazy guy could have attacked anyone, not necessarily cyclist. sjauch: exactly which part of the bridge did you find the blood?

As if we didn't have enough things to watch out for while riding in the city.

I was just in Cornell hospital myself, and had my lip sewn back together after a bike accident. The surgeon was telling me about this as the victim also went through Cornell oral surgery. 13 stitches for me.

Meaning what -- one nutcase attacks a cyclist, and all of the sudden there's this massive threat to all NYC cyclists? What are you, new? ;)

Clearly this is an exceedingly rare circumstance, and one that is unlikely "on the upswing." There's no more reason to worry about this today than there was last week, which is to say "not much at all."

Things are a little different here in Texas. In my experience, that would normally read, "I sometimes wonder about using rural roads late at night or very early in the morning. I guess if you see coyote running it's better to turn around take a different route."

The question is, should a cyclist be afraid of a pedestrian, or a pedestrian the cyclist?

Lesson: if you assault someone, get half naked and start acting crazy

That's awesome.

I'd be far less angry if I were assaulted by a crazy naked person than if it were just a regular assault. At least I'd have a great story to tell for the rest of my life. Gotta look at the positive side of things.

Actually this incident should be viewed more as a lunatic against normal people than a pedestrian against a cyclist: if the attacker were on a bike, would that be less of an issue for us on bike forums?

There's always someone here who's willing to jump in and provide an expert analysis, even for your jokes. Thanks for putting our fears of a growing antibike uprising of crazies to rest.
