Living Car Free - Weeded the car-free garden

I just weeded a somewhat neglected corner of the garden in preparation to put in a tomato crop and found all this yummy stuff growing wild...

nice harvest! I'm trying to grow mache in a cold frame this winter.

I'm going to have to remember to start a similar thread in May to get the goat of our friends in the southern hemisphere! :)

Actually we have been experiencing the most amazing Indian Summer here in Michigan. Today the temp was 68F, with bright but gentle sunlight from low in the southern sky. The gaudy orange, yellow and red leaves are almost finished, but the warm dry weather is lingering on.

We had a fair garden this past summer. Amazingly, we're still getting quite a bit of okra, which is mainly a hot weather plant. What's growing well now is lettuces, broccoli, and spinach. Next spring will be the third year for our asparagus patch and we're looking forward to finally getting a decent amount now that it's established.

We just had our first hard freeze so the main garden is done for the year. Now it is time to start the cool weather crops with the cold frames. In the next year or so I hope to get a full blown green house up so we can have tomatoes and such all year round. I live in the the edge of the Sandhills/Coastal Plains of NC so our winters are pretty temperate and sunny. I am hoping with passive solar and thermal mass I can keep a greenhouse without having to run active heating on it. We shall see.

My homesteading accomplishments this year were more in the kitchen than in the garden. Some vegetables simply thrive here and there's nothing I can do to stop them. The rest, well, no matter what I try there's nothing that helps very much.

So in the garden I'm doing what's easy, also experimenting to discover what else might be easy. I mixed a lot of different seeds together and planted them randomly in different places. Spinach took over in one place, and beets in another place, for example. I look at stuff like that and ponder the mysteries and try to figure it all out.

I'm going to hold you to that!... and it'll make me very happy to see it thrive for you. :thumb: once you've sampled home grown it's like a drug addiction.

By then my new & improved aquaponics system will be up and running so hopefully I'll be posting pics of the winter veggies and freshwater fish & crustaceans I'll be harvesting :D

And here I thought you meant you were thinning out your bicycle collection. ;)

You probably know this, but "hoop house" is a good term to research.

:( My only gardening effort in the next few months will be to investigate growing some wheatgrass sprouts.
