I picked these up recently, they are laced to a set of Araya "Red" tubulars .. can't seem to id' them. I looked at Velobase and some other catalog sites ...

Suntour skewers, seem to be very nicely built. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Scott

I believe that's an XC hub. Very nice, impossible to find the tool for.

They came stock on my 84? Schwinn Voyageur.

THanks OFG, I know they came off a mid '80's Bridgestone so your timeline is correct ..

Agree with OFG. I think they also sold these either under the Specialized label and/or Performance house brand, too.

I believe that those came on the early/mid 80's Miyata 610 I sold earlier this summer. I looked in the Miyata catalog to confirm OFG, but all it said was something about sealed bearing hubs. They seemed ok to me.

My ca. 1983 Suntour catalog does not have them though, so I guess that they must have come later.

Jusat checked the Schwinn catalog from 84, it lists them as RH6400 hubs.

FWIW, here's what the tool looks like:

The hubs use sealed cartridge bearings; the tool is only needed to set the preload.

I suspect a lockring tool with a hinged end might work for this if you need it:

Hey wait, I took heat for having a Miyata catalog quote in my sig but you owned one? I call foul, shenanigans!!!! :)

owned does not equal keep. The bike came with panniers, tools, spare parts, and a nice Brooks for a price that was far too good to pass up.

Kudos for getting rid of the quote though. :thumb:

Back on topic, thanks for sharing the pic of the tool John. I may need to keep an eye on Ebay. I believe that I might have one of the Performance versions of those hubs kicking around the garage.

Thanks everyone, they are certainly well made. I'll keep an eye open for the tool, although right now they're very smooth, hopefully no rebuild needed.

Keith, yea, the Miyata quote .. wow. :notamused:
